So i left sky a few years ago and went over to BT for all 3 services (Telephone, Broadband and TV)

I want sure at first but after some time i really liked the service, the BT TV Box was excellent and so was the content.

Two weeks ago out of the blue a guy rings from carphone warehouse asking what i got and how much i pay, maybe he could save me money?
At this point i should have done what i always do and said "Not interested" and ended the call, but i didnt :/

I was paying BT £51 a month for everything
So he matched it like for like with sky for £45 and said i would get more channels.
We went through with it and i received emails of my order, at this point i realised i had no sports channels at all now? obviously i got BT Sports for free as i had my broadband with them.
I rang sky direct and explained whats happened, feeling sorry for me they gave me a 63% discount and added sports for £55 a month.... ummmm
But i wont get BT sports.... something that caused friction with my son who watches UFC, MotoGP and Champions League football all of which are dedicated BT shows

Today my new Dish and Sky Q box got installed... all new shiny modern tech, great!
whats this... no HD channels?
So back on the phone to sky... adding HD means i have to upgrade my package to include box set etc and the HD option is seperate for normal channels and for sports i would need both.
I said to her why is HD an option, who buys HD TV and has a SKY HD box but doesnt want it? it should be standard :/
This adds another £20 a month for a new total of £75 a month??

Hang on a minute.... i was paying £51 to BT and very happy, now im stuck in an 18 month contract that i dont need or want for either £55 or £75 with HD that i had for free with BT

So... ive decided to cancel as im in the 31 days cooling off period.
Question is, in the T&C its says i will need to pay for any services used and costs incurred up to that point.
Does this include the cost of the engineer fitting the new dish etc? what costs will i have to pay for?

Have you got a magnifying glass ?

Cancelling in the cooling off period should mean you don't pay a thing, otherwise the three UK cartel diaboliques could survive on just takeups and client database swopsies.

Getting your money back

If you paid up front or made a deposit and cancel in the cooling-off period you’ll be entitled to receive all of the money back. The only exception is if you asked for services to be provided during the cooling-off period, in which case the business will keep what’s necessary to cover the cost of services provided up until you cancelled.

If you didn’t give the business any money but they provided services during the cooling-off period at your request, you'll probably be expected to pay them for these unless your contract with them states otherwise.

Cancelling a service you’ve arranged

You mentioned that the Carphone warehouse peddler said he would match 'like for like' but this is clearly not what you got, or were likely to unless you paid more. They would have known this before and after the call.

If you get no joy with Sky, then you should have Carphone Warehouse pay for the charges, since they are making commission on a misleading sale.

Well other than watch Sky sports in 4:3 in crap definition (However the next program did go 16:9) ive not used any extra services, i was charged a £30 one off fee though during change over.
Even worse i ran BT and they are unaware i was leaving and have had no notification from Sky!
So if i dont cancel i will be paying BT £51 and Sky £55 a month :O
Ironically since alerting BT to the fact i was leaving they are also making me offers to stay! offering everything they have all in HD i might add lol, for £1 less a month.
So in short...
Sky = Get more for more money
GT = Get more for less money :/
Not rocket science is it lol

We do. I refuse to pay the extra for the HD channels - the free ones are fine. The quality of the SD channels the missus watches is fine on our 49" LG TV

At some point they will drop the ridiculous HD charge.

What they craftily did was transfer the charge from the Sky Plus days when you had to pay for the recording facility over to charging extra for HD!

To be fair, all providers in Europe charge extra for HD - it's not a Sky only thing.

And yet in France the main PSB terrestrial broadcasters (and presumably the satellite simulcasts - can anyone confirm) have ceased the SD transmissions and are only available in HD.

Yeah pretty sure that French PSB channels are all in HD since last year on satellite as well. But that's more the exception than the rule. Sadly.

Yes that is true & we may have to do the same when 700 MHz frequency band & most of the UHF frequencies go to Mobile Broadband with the bigger cheque books.
My thoughts exactly. I've become quite accustomed to the extra HD channels that are currently sitting on frequencies that are about to disappear.
