Potentially willing to try this - I have Dump1090 running on a PC and am willing to have a go at sharing data.

Once I have every thing sorted I am willing to have a go at this.Though I suspect that it may be beyond me.
I will keep my eye on this thread. I may then learn how to do it.

Once we have the first stage link up running successfully both ways we will give instructions to anyone who is interested.

Receiving the data is actually pretty simple - just make a few adjustments in vrs. Sending it is a bit more complex which Im still working on.

Bllody hell you would think computers should be easy these days. FINALLY @Chris1979 can see my feed & I can see his.

Im not quite sure which change triggered the success but Ive been playing with port forwarding on the router, windows firewalls & also threatened the computer with a big stick (John Cleese style!)

OK what Ive done this evening is this. All config changes within vrs occur at the Rebroadcast servers page (Tools Options Rebroadcast servers)

Set a new one up and choose the port you want Mine is called Kelso as thats my station name on 360Radar & I chose a port well away from anything else in use - 41001 in this case.

These are the settings you want. IP address hidden for security - I trust everyone on the forum but you never know who is reading these things!

The I went into the router config page and port forwarded 41001 to the device with vrs running on it. Each router is different but instructions can be found on line for most of them.

My router has various ports preconfigured for forwarding services (Kaazaa / Limewire etc) but I added a new type of service called VRS & allocated 41001 to it. This was then pointed at at my desktop computer which runs the vrs software so I can watch the planes going over whist Im sitting at my desk.

I also went into the windows firewall and added an inbound rule for port 41001 to allow it.

A quick restart of VRS & I got a message from Chris he could see my data. Yah!! When its working the server stats look like this (personal details removed again):

vrs share working 1.JPG

The feed status in the middle shows the inbound data - Kelso is me, the blacked out one is Chris & the merged feed gives the combined plot on the vrs page.

The rebroadcast server status at the bottom is my data outgoing to Chris.

Once the data is flowing both ways there is one more tweak on the VRS map to show all the planes. Click on the gear wheel menu top left of the map. Click on options, General tab, the data feed at the top. Change receiver from your home feed to merged feed. If everything is ok you should get your neighbours aircraft pop up on your vrs map :)

Oh for outgoing data you will need a static address - almost all numerical ip addresses are dynamic & change every few days. Pick a service like dyndns or no-ip and set up a free account. The software tracks ip changes and locks them to a host name. You give the host name to your fellow contributors.

So to get things working tonight I gave Chris my actual IP address - example 123.456.7.89 with port 41001. Once we had my data sharing working I then set up a static host name and set it to point at the ip.

So myhost.ddns.net was swapped for 123.456.7.89 at Chris's vrs computer & it still worked. myhost.ddns.net should continue to work even when my ip address changes to 987.654.3.21 in a couple of days time as it will auto track the change.

It all sounds complicated but if you work logically its not too bad. The two stages you need to be really careful with are tinkering in the router and adjusting the firewall(s). You dont want to blow too many holes in your security!

Just been playing around with this and I've already hit a stumbling block - I can't rebroadcast in AVR format as it's not supported :( I shall have to tinker some more before I can proceed :p

EDIT: Rather painless, needed to change a setting in receiver (it had always been setup as Base Station feed, I changed that to AVR). I have that setup and will put a hole through the router firewall, then I think (hope!) I'm ready for the next step!

Try the format as basestation, and see if that helps.

Ross, in the Address bar, which address is that - is that a single ip address you are pushing out your feed to? And how did you get to put an address in there without ticking the Push button?

@Chris1979. I'll join in later when Ive got an outbound issue sorted - it was all working perfectly here when I switched the computer off at 23.15 last night. This evening when I got home I could see Chris's data, but nowt going out from my setup, yet nothing had changed overnight.... Grr.
