Ah. Tried different (older) laptop with same Mint + Firefox ... and here, things work???
(I am writing this on that now).
I am slightly baffled - this appears to be specific to my main (recently re-installed and fresh) laptop, which otherwise is working really well...
Don't know cause, but I need to find out.
So, good people, no need to spend too much time on this before I have found out what's going on...

I know certain script and ad blockers can cause all sorts of weird issues. Do you have any installed there?

But my dear Captain Jack - you are so spot on!
Your post triggered me remembering having activated something called "Block additional tracking" in the "Privacy and security" section of AdBlock+.
Uncheck this, and Voila, edit boxes are back. Posting this message will confirm if the strange pop-up also disappears.
Edit: It did! Thank you for the guidance - hopefully this may help other in the future.

Tried Firefox 58.0.2 64-bit (same version) on iMac w. macOS Sierra, and eveything works here.
Must be something on Mint with an update?? Will explore further...
Well well,, same problem here st1.
Like yourself, need to reply to a post, and remove Quote field if I want to post.

Firefox Quantum v.58.0.2., Win7.

Only noticed this today, as I've been using IE.

EDIT- Just seen CJ's post. I'll try that also.

My blocker's UBlock Origin. Disabled that as there aren't any options similar to AdBlock +. Problem still occurs.

Will have to do some more checks.

The Interweb thingy is slowly fighting back against Ad Blocking ..... many sites now flag up that they've detected one in use and decline full access. It's war.

Strange that the identical problems posted here have occured at much the same time, with the latest Firefox version.

Did a complete clean install of mint, and full package update, and tried again.
Same behaviour - even out of the box with no ad-blocking.
It turns out the default setting for Tracking protection triggers the behaviour. Changing the setting to "never" removes the problem.

Not sure if this is a good thing, but at least I now understand whence it came...

Ah. That explains why I didn't have the same issue with the same Firefox/Mint64 config .... Tracking Protection has always been set to Never.

So was whatever Setting you had really Default, or was it inherited from earlier Firefox versions but somehow had a different effect with the latest update? (Firefox tends to retain old settings even if you do an apparently clean reinstall)

Completely new and blank (virtual) machine.
Fresh Mint 18.3 64-bit install. So definitely Default... :)

OK, changed mine from Default to Never. Haven't noticed that option, thanks.
