this coded is finally certified which means only one thing

huge swap of all

www.h265.net

this is good news for 4k broadcast testers using this compression on 1 transponder now all broadcaster can use 30mbit quality channels

but very bad news for customers which will speed up 4k teknology to markets.

all Tvs all players i dont know about receivers must be swapped coz TVs are using processor to decrypt

all current devices are using H264

btw 4k Hobbit using 330GB data :)

there a talks that this compression will be available in 1-2 years.

thats why Japanese speeded up introduction of UHDTV as standard.

I'd still be happy with a decent CRT TV. The only reason for needing HD content is because crappy new LCD TVs simply cannot display SD content properly. I have zero interest in 3D malarkey - I have enough crap on my face as it is (glasses, hearing aids...). And now we are being given this lovely 4k.....

Is there REALLY the consumer demand for this - or is it just the manufacturers pushing it because they think they can con the consumers into shelling out another few hundred quid - and scrap perfectly good 2 & 3 year old tv's?

The last big thing they pushed failed dismally (yet again!)

No.

Yes. It's all about "please buy a new tv, and please buy my brand rather than someone elses. So I gotta make mine look like better value for money, so I make up all sorts of 'you gotta have this in the future' features to attract you to my brand.
The last big thing they pushed failed dismally (yet again!)
Yes. And it will (again).
Key point (as always) is better content, not higher resolution content, not 3D content, not internet content, not even flat-screen content. Best content == wins.

I think a good quality HD source feeding pretty much any HD TV out there will produce more than acceptable results for me. Yes, curved 4k tv's look good with demo content on them but.... Very little material is actually destined for that. I still watch 'Married...With Children' from a crappy source in 4:3 aspect.

Still, 4K TVs are a better idea than 3D malarkey. But do we need it (or have room for it)? No. Non. Nyet.

I watch most of my tv from the multiple sat boxes via rf modulators onto an analogue tv card on my 7 year old beat up Dell computer.

Whilst keeping half an eye on the Panny CRT the other side of the room which is fed by scart from the Sky HD box - and rf connections from the other boxes for those times when OH wants to watch one of the foreign stations - (eg the Dec 31st midnights fun)

Thats perfectly good enough for me. The Panny will sit in the corner of the room until it dies then it will be replaced by summat a bit more up to date.

:D

Fair enough the test 4k tv I saw down at Currys a few months back had gorgeous pics on it - but that was being fed from a decent source & not some horribly overcompressed tv service (ITV & Channel5 Im looking at you!)

Didn't you upgrade to an LCD recently, AS?

Yes, some UK channels remind me of some overly compressed African channel. Awful to watch. If only they got rid of all those pointless +1 channels... And taken a leaf out of Scandinavian and French channels, where even SD looks great on a modern LCD telly.

There's nothing wrong with 3D content if it is done right.
