I started with something cheap, if you have a rough figure on what you want to spend I will advise you what to look for :)

Thanks Evan, just give me a shout whenever you want to pop over and we will sort something out :)

Hi CB, ive not used this machine buts its the recommended starter and it finds stuff, if you bought one new you would not lose much money when you come to sell it, if you bought second hand you would get one a little cheaper, MD do hold there price.

I bought a metal detector last year when my wedding ring went missing for about 4 months and I was convinced my son had been playing with it in the garden and dropped it somewhere. Finally found it hidden in the sofa where I'd already checked about 90 times..... Metal detector has gone unused since :)

Go out and give it a go HB you might like it, my best find today was a copper thimble, still nice to be out and enjoyed my few hours :),

@CROSSBONES Hi pal this is the write up about the hoard found with the garret, i hope you have the same beginners luck :),
I found Roman coins worth £100,000... 20 minutes after buying first metal detector: Novice unearths 'nationally significant' find during first treasure hunt
Just goes to show how lucky some folk are ..
I was detecting from about 1980 till I got ill few years back ...so spans about 30 years ..and must have walked 100s of miles and dug many thousands of holes ..
..and only found 2 gold coins in all that time ..
A George VI half sovereign .,.and my beautiful Corieltauvi gold stater ..
Never was that lucky..

The field i have been working today i found two gold sovereigns both the same date 1820 in the same area untouched by the plough, i am convinced there has to be more but nothing has shown the last two years, i have been lucky and had some nice finds,

I packed in work for a year detected and sold what i found i ended up with just over 20G in the year so i guess ive been a little bit lucky.

You obviously have access to some prime territory there Martin ..
I really must come and see you ...lol
but how much I can do these days is questionable .
Fatigue and MS go hand in hand sadly.
I just wish I'd made contact years ago when I was younger and fitter..

Yes its good land but i am plagued with night hawkers they go on when its drilled and get the first and easy pickings farmer on my best farm does not allow me to go on drilled :( , i had 142 hammered coins my first year along with other nice stuff.

Ive been at it 5 years now and the finds are harder to come by but still lots out there, god knows what the hawkers have had over the years , like ive said your more than welcome i have a spare machine and we have no need to go mad nice and steady and when you've had enough we go,

I take my bro now and again hes 63 and i look after him while were out, i am sure i can do the same for you if need be:).

I sometimes go out an look for railroad spikes and old hardware, but the big problem around here is that there is too much fools gold in the soil, it gets in the way.

Best thing I found was an old 1873 winchester rifle, it was under some floor boards in a very old cabin, (good place to look for things) it was all rusted up but I still got $500 for it as is.

I'd look for gold but all the good land around here for that is under claim, you can get shot real fast if your out looking for that stuff and your on someones claim.
