Her indoors decided she did not like Windows 8/10 when it updated from Win 7. In her wisdom she did a bit of research on the web and messed up big time. Now she has a computer, I reloaded Win 7 pro from the disc but unable to find the key. She rang Windows and they told her she could buy a new key. Maybe I can put XP back for her as I have the key.

Or you could just install Linux Mint for free and avoid all the hassle?

If she was happy with Win 7, she'll adapt instantly.

Thanks. I will take a look, she found win 8 irritating. Like a supermarket, they keep moving things around.

If you want to try linux you can test the the linux flavour of your choice easily without doing any changes to the computer.

Download the iso of the flavour of your choice, burn it to dvd using a suitable iso burner & boot the computer from dvd. Give it a few minutes & the comnputer will set up a "live session"

DONT click the install linux icon on the desktop unless you are sure!!

It really is worthwhile - Mint is designed to seamlessly entice Windows users to a fairly similar looking Desktop and functionality. And you can do more with it. Not all Progs/Apps are comparable, but most are.

See if there is a windows.old folder, can be used to revert in case of upgrade (but probably too late, due to reinstallation). Instead of microsoft, try contacting the laptop\pc manufacturer, asking for recovery media, they can\should provide that for a basic fee. btw, no COA sticker anywhere on the pc?
Or maybe go the linux way, it's getting better and better! Good luck.

As a releative newcomer to linux Ive found mint & peppermint to be the nicest to use. Lubuntu is useful for putting extremely decrepit old computers back to use

Glad you like it - many of us swear by it.

With a full install you'll get the usual setup facilities for the bits and bobs you are missing.

The mouse pointer will be a driver issue.

The @ issue will be the wrong keyboard mapped - thats an option during the full set up

There must be a key extractor on the internet somewhere.

Yes, there are many key extractors, I've used them myself. But they only work if your installation is already validated. Unfortunately TJ seems to have overwritten the original, validated, installation and thisn probably won't work.

That is because Windows is incredibly bloated. It is not until people try an alternative that they realize just how bad it is.

If you want to use Windows 7 just google "Windows Loader by Daz"

That will sort out the key issue.
