My Satellite Setup
MediaPortal 1.0 HTPC; Hauppauge NOVA HD S2 DVB-S2.

I live in a building made up of 14 flats. We have a Sky dish installed somewhere as the previous owners had Sky. I am unable to tell how many dishes, LNB's, whether any switches are used, etc.

I'm trying to scan for Freesat (Astra 28.2E) channels but failing. I'm using a PCI Hauppauge NOVA HD S2 DVB-S2 card.

I am using MediaPortal and my Signal Level is 100% but Signal Quality is always 0% and I keep getting red "no signal" errors.

I have tried using Hauppauge's own WinTV v7 software, and even this can't find any channels!

I imagine this is something to do with the LNB setup settings? I have no idea what to enter as I've moved from the cable scene to the sat one and a complete noob at the moment...

Anyone able to assist please?

Without any knowledge at all of the configuration and condition of the system, it's impossible to say what the problem is: Don't be misled by the 100% Signal Strength reading. No Quality = No Signal and that is as likely to be due to nothing being available at your wall socket (or whatever) as it is to be due to an incorrect card setting.

You really need to make enquiries of Building Management before we can go any further.

Sounds more like that you have not got the receiver setup right.

Could you borrow a sky or freesat receiver from someone?, see if that works.

hello i agree,
there may be a receiver set up problem.
if you can borrrow some one else in the same building and set it up at your house and it works no problem then its you set up on your box.
lnb power should be on and 22 khz should be on nas well.
the system will know to cross over at 11.7 ghz.
if the lnb is off then it will not work.
if there was a lnb problem at the multi switch then no ones system in all 14 flats would be working.
keep us informed.

I don't really have a receiver I can borrow, but I will try and come up with something as this is a logical first step...

What should I ask my management company specifically? I doubt they'll be too clued up on this...

You could ask them to send someone to check out your satellite feed I suppose, maybe they would charge you though. Or pay someone local to come and check your feed, it is a very quick job.

Well I'd be inclined to ask a few of your neighbours if they have any problems - If they don't, then as ralphmagno said earlier, the system may actually be fine: But that wouldn't tell you if someone had acquired your feed somehow - A lot of Flats have problems with insufficient feeds in these days when many folk want to use PVRs and it isn't unknown for a rabbit run to be created by some enterprising (or foolhardy?) other Resident.

But maybe in the course of speaking to neighbours, one might let you borrow their box to try?

BTW, have you successfully used your Hauppauge Card elsewhere?

If the last occupier had Sky working, then it is most likely to be your PC card settings. Could you go through the setup menus and tell us what settings you have? Perhaps even take some screen grabs and upload them here.

What is the price of buying a sat-feed metre to test this myself? I’m sure it will come in useful further down the line and would be a good solution if it is around the price of paying someone to come over and do the job for me?

I have not. I’ve only just purchased it from an eBay seller, hence it is also second-hand but came with all retail packaging and accessories. Obviously the fact that the card could be faulty is also on my mind…

I will do this as soon as I get back from work this evening. I’ll try to locate the position of the Satellite and take a picture as well, however it may be too dark to do this.

On a separate point, I tested the Freeview feed (as already mentioned, there is one cable in the wall connecting to the plate with both a TV Female Socket and a Sat F-Socket). This worked perfectly.

What is the price of, and could you recommend a Sat-Meter Signal Tester? I can see this becoming useful further down the line and would make sense in purchasing one if the cost is similar to having someone pop over to do this for me.

I purchased the card from eBay, hence it is second-hand. It arrived boxed as retail with all accessories and was not listed as faulty. As a result I have nothing to make me believe the card is faulty at this moment in time. However this is not to say this is a possibility. I would have thought that my current lack of technical knowledge in the Sat field and the other unknowns are more of an area for problems at the moment.

I shall do this as soon as I return home tonight. I will also try and locate the Sat(‘s) and take a picture of it (/them) if it is not too dark.

On a further point, the wall plate has a TV Female Socket and a Satellite F-Socket. There is only one coax cable in the wall connected to the plate.

I tested the Freeview signal using the TV Female Socket. This works perfectly. So at least we know the single cable in the wall is connected to at least something…

This is because certain words in your post triggered the filter and thus placed in a moderation queue. Now sorted :)

Good news (kind of), ProgDVB has found channels, thus there is a signal on the line. Any idea how ProgDVB can help me on what settings to use in MediaPortal?

Scrap that, all the channels are displayed in the 'Lost Channels' menu, nothing in the 'New Channels' box...

Is there a transponder list in that software?
