Just Sharing This 4.5" to 3" Pole Adapter

I would have just threaded the 4 inch pole and used a 3" to 4" bell reducer and an appropriate length 3 inch pipe nipple, (all galvanized) all this can be had at most hardware/plumbing stores.(and be sure to use some pipe joint compound to keep things water tight)

Any plumber could do the threadding job.

Unless your into doing the job yourself and have the time.

Without the access to hardware stores as you have in California, the fastest for me was to order brackets like these:



The specific ones I have fit 89mm (3.5 inch) poles and down to around 40mm. And less than 10 GBP...
I am sure you can get larger sizes as well.
A bit tricky to adjust, but once you get the hang of it, you can pitch the attached pole in very fine increments to ensure absolute verticality...

Those clamps are very useful, that looks to be a good solution. There was a forum member (Spiff) recently looking to add a secondary pole to a main pole, your clamp solution might be useful to him, I posted a reply in his topic referring him back to your post 21, I hope that was OK?

It's been a little while, but I think I bought them hm-sat in germany.

For larger dishes, I would probably buy two pairs, and use three brackets to minimise any sideways tilting through wind-loading.

While I am waiting for the new bottle of gas, thought I'd drill up the holes for the nuts. Also made up some adapters for stabilising the whole thing...

CJ, while you are waiting for new bottle of gas you probably have some time to rethink the way you temporary fix nuts (which are going to be welded) to the pipe. After doing this procedure several times I would advice to fix them by using additional bolts and nuts in smaller diameter. For example, if nuts ti be welded are M10 then M8 bolts would be better to temporary hold them. Why? Just because when you weld the nut, it can stuck together with the bolt (if they are having same threat).

Good tip, thanks Rimant. I was worried about this. Another thing I did is drill slightly larger holes for the bolts because the galvanising process 'fills' the holes and makes them just a tiny but smaller. So I drilled a size up.

All the welding is finished. Just need to get it galvanised and it should be good to go.

Had my eye on plasma cutter but don't think I'll get enough use out of that for the price they cost! Lathes are even more expensive...

I have enough projects to keep me going for the time being. Once the CM is finished, I'll get back to restoring my 1224 motors.

Morning @John - there's a bit of talk about welders on this thread but it's basically this one despite ordering this one! The latter is apparently discontinued and comes with more bits than the HG1800... There's also some talk about it in comments.

Bottom line - it's a nice little welder, doesn't take a lot of space and I haven't had any issues with it. DC only, so won't weld alu but not an issue for me personally.

Galvanised bits are back - the only issue is that the bolts are stuck solid!! It's currently warming up in the oven so I can remove them.... hopefully.

Clearly the oven isn't hot enough to soften the zinc... will her to get the blowtorch from my dad this weekend, hopefully will free it off that way. I should have used a smaller bolt with some washers on each end to block the inside of the nuts being galvanised (it's already stainless anyway).

@Captain Jack How did you finish this project? Is it already installed, the adapter?
There is one I just made for friend of mine: upper part INOX OD 60mm. Lower part galvanized ID 81mm. Bolts are M10. Of course, the lower part should be treated by paint or zinc spray.

CJ, only just saw those brackets you made. Cracking bit of welding I must say!
And yes doesn't work very well without argon!
