It'll be interesting to see how reception from the footprint works out in and around me (about 50km south of the 45cm dish limit). A lot will depend on what services they put on there, but I know an awful lot of people in Normandy who use a $ky mini dish (and grumble when the signal fades in the rain). I can see the local installers stocking up on larger dishes.

Forgive my lack of knowledge on the matter, but while knowing the footprint of the satellite is actuelly quite nice, do we know what it will be used for? Mainly, will it be used to replace/add to existing SD channels into HD? New channels, perhaps?

Again, I apologize if it has already been answered.

Regards,

NWW

As I clearly don't know as much as you do on the subject, if I understand correctly, there was a "gap" in the spectrum emitted from 28.2E that this satellite will (sort of) fill? So, that means more transponders => more channels?

I'm still learning about sat's ^^

Ok, so as a rough estimate that corresponds to more or less 50 HD channels or 120 SD channels. What/who do you think will occupy that space? Also, in the longer term (later this year for example) do you think 2D might be relieved of duty and 1n take over the whole block between 10.7 & 11.2 GHz?

Weeeeell, the Beeb have said it is their aspiration to transmit all their channels in HD...

Interesting, as by my count that would be 37 services if you include the existing HD/SD channels, plus regional variations and red button streams. If they did go totally HD, wouldn't that kind of make BBC HD redundant?....unless they started transmitting that in 1080P LOL

Yes. The red button steams should be available in HD before the Olympics IMHO.

BBC HD would certainly be redundant and so would BBC Parliament HD probably wouldn't happen. Then again BBC Parliament SD is already redundant IMHO!

Something else to consider is that if the Beeb went S2 on their SD transmissions that would also free up a bit of space. Not saying that's going to happen though...

Agreed, I have no interest in watching the goings on in a plush and exclusive members club LOL. Not so sure about the streams going HD though, as there's only about a year before the Olympics. However, there may be work afoot that we are not privy to. I guess there maybe a possibility that CBBC and CBeebies may seperate from BBC3 and BBC4 instead of sharing. Though I dread to think what repeated content will crop up on 3 & 4. I enjoy a lot of their programming but get fed up with constant repeats.

Nice graphic, but for us on the farther reaches, it'll be interesting to see if the roll-off is steeper than with 2D.
Across Denmark, the required dish size goes from 80-90cm at the far west to just under 180cm near Copenhagen...
And let's see what this does to the weird side-lobes you around Stockholm.

(Not to mention in the south of europe, but that's not really my area of expertise)

I suppose only time will show.

Hello!
here, are now the time shedule,of the bbc transponder change!

Changes to BBC services on satellite, Autumn 2011 TheBBC will be making some changes to their channels on satellite, if youare viewing outside the UK, you may have problems receiving somechannels after the move. In week 38 (September 19-25) the following changes are scheduled:
Moving from 11954 H 27500 2/3 (DSAT 7) to Astra 2D:
BBC News moving to 10803 H 22000 5/6
BBC Parliament moving to 10788 V 22000 5/6
BBC Alba moving to 10818 V 22000 5/6 In week 39 (September 26-October 2) the following changes are scheduled: From 12441 V 27500 2/3 to:
11954 H 27500 2/3 (DSAT 7) BBC Red Button sports streams.
The BBC streams will be reduced from 7 to 5 which will mean a reduction of the Red Button Service on Freesat and Sky.
On October 7 BBC will cease transmitting from 12441 V bringing its transponders down to 6 from 7.
The changes are apparently as a result of BBCs economy drive.
On Freesat and Sky the changes will be carried out automatically, users of other satellite receivers will have to do a re-tune.

Hi Turok

Yes, these changes have been reported in another thread. They aren't anything to do with 1N though, they are a cost-cutting exercise, and would probably have happened regardless of a new satellite being launched.

The new BBC News transmission has appeared and is labeled 6405. I cannot check the others from this location.
