With the Superbowl tonight it made me wonder this..

Lets take Telstar 12 at 15W for example, they have a beam for North America and one for Europe. As a broadcaster could I beam up from the US to Telstar 12 and have it broadcast back out on the Europe beam? Or is it only possible to broadcast to the area you can transmit to - if that makes sense?

Thanks

Many stallites with dual beams allow cross strapping of the up and down beams - so Telstar 15W allows transmit from the USA into Europe. And vice versa.

Excellent thank you, that makes sense.

Could someone with a massive dish possibly receive the US signals from Europe then? Or would the European signals wash it out.

Telstar 12 is an interesting bird, I have heard that the European beam was once jammed from Cuba on one of the Yankee Farsi language channels.

Not in 15W case the Americas beam is on a different band of spectrum.

Fascinating stuff, I guess most of the US to Europe broadcasts are sent via fibre now adays though.. :( Shame for us.
