Bulgaria Sat has chosen media processing hardware from Ericsson to distribute Ultra HD services on Bulgariasat-1.

The latter, which was launched in June, is Bulgaria’s first geostationary satellite.

As part of the deal, Ericsson will deliver its AVP 4000 system encoders, 56 HD MPEG-4, three HD HEVC and 46 SD MPEG-4 and Ultra HD services.

Bulgaria Sat is a subsidiary of Bulsatcom, with which Ericsson has had a long-standing relationship dating back over 10 years.

Commenting on the latest agreement, Maxim Zayakov, CEO of Bulgaria Sat and Bulsatcom, said: “The launch of BulgariaSat-1 marks a clear intention to expand the reach and scope of our content distribution. As a long-standing strategic partner of Bulsatcom, Ericsson has consistently provided the very best technologies and solutions to enable us to give our subscribers a wide range of services and content. With this latest agreement, we will be able to deliver a series of enhanced services – as well as our new 4K service – underlining the level of trust we place in the quality of Ericsson’s technology to deliver the performance and reliability our subscribers have come to expect.”

Arpad Jordan, head of media processing & delivery, Media Solutions, Ericsson, added: “As demand for ultra-high definition and 4K content increases, service providers need to transform their delivery to allow for greater reliability and efficiency to ensure their subscribers receive a high-quality viewing experience. The AVP 4000 compression platform offers the necessary operational flexibility through its modular design allowing service providers to expand their channel offerings and move towards higher definition content in the future. Through our continued partnership with Bulsatcom, we are providing an encoding platform that meets the complex video processing demands of today’s TV and media market.”

Whatever happened to this satellite ??? In this prime position.. Nothing. Usually testing is carried our AFAIK by the manufacturer. Received that OK... Was expecting big things . Easily receivable here in Western Europe.
Ended up a bit like Hispasat 36 West !!!

I was thinking the same thing! 3 major satellites have launched over 3 months ago now (BulgariaSat, HellasSat 3 & Hispasat 36W) and between them we currently have just 1 active transponder (12252V on HellasSat 3). Seems odd they spend millions putting new satellites up there and not bother using them!

Some satellites that have moved are inactive here in Europe:-
Eutelsat 33E @ 33.0°E HotBird 10 moved here a couple of years ago no European activity launched 1st qtr 2009 still has 6 to 8 years in geo orbit,

Intelsat 16 (IS-16) launched 4 years ago now idle @ 58.1 west (Intelsat standby satellite that can replace any satellite)
Amazonas 5 - Hispasat similar on standby @ 58 west launched a few months ago
EchoStar-23 Launched March 2017 holding inactive @ 45 west
Hispasat 36W-1 at 36.0°west inactive as already mentioned

BulgariaSat 1 @ 1.9° east inactive as already mentioned
ABS 4 at 61.0° just 2 data streams launched June 2017

There is plenty of unused capacity up there currently.

I certainly didn't think it was an amateur satellite in that primary position. I though a number of the BULSATCOM services from Hellas Sat at 39east were going to be transferred there.
I was under the impression the satellite was built in conjunction with BULSATCOM for that very purpose.

There's a TT&C beacon from Astra 4A 4.8E on 11702.5V (Crazyscan Plot attached) and a much weaker one from SES-5 on 11700.25V (not resolvable on Crazyscan). The Astra 4A beacon is a few dB weaker than the Bulgarisat-1 beacon on 11705.5V. See posts 26 & 30.

I can't work out what is happening at around 3E. I can see SES5, 5E, 11700.25V but also something at 11700.5V slightly to the west of it and to the east of Bulgariasat. My dish calibration is not good enough.
11700.5v_3e_approx.gif

Edit: I looked in a narrower bandwidth and can not see any modulation on the unknown signal on 11700.5

I wonder which one you are seeing. possibly the 11700.5 if SES5 is on the Nordic beam. I have not found a listed beacon at that frequency and location (Eutelsat or Rascom)
This plot shows SES5 and Astra4A.

@s-band,

I have rechecked 3.1E today and found two beacon, one at 11698 H and another at 11705 V.
I remind you that a list of beacons you find here ,of course not complete, because in the meantime other satellites have become operational.

added:1.9E-11708 V
A very nice beacon is at 12498 H too.

@satesco I think that Bulgariasat-1 is on 11705.5V & 12496.5H (posts 26&30). I think that the one you are seeing on 11705 is Bulgariasat. With my 1.5m it is still strong when the dish is peaked on 11699.8H (3.1E) It is so strong that I get it on a side lobes up to about 12E (which is telling me I should check the dish alignment!)

In re-checking I am convinced that the carrier I can see on 11700.5V is from the 3E position as it peaks at the same spot as 11699.8H. It's not listed on satbeams or Frequency Plan Satellites as far as I can see. I've put all the plots together here: Satellites Community - Beacon Levels & Spectra
