Have just returned from a family visit in Stavanger southwest norway, weather was not that exiting ( rain and very windy ).
One evening my son inlaw, grand children and I decided to build a pc from virgin ( unused and boxed )spare parts in the tool shed, and load the hard drive with linux mint 32 bit.
All went well with the connections ( fired up using a flat bladed screwdriver to short the start pins ) downloaded the linux mint 32 bit iso from the internet, loaded it and fired up.

Was so impressed with the result that I downloaded the 64 bit version and overwrote windows 7 ( always crashing ) on my 4 year old asus lappy to stream internet tv to the tele.

Example bit unsharp as hand held.

Hope this helps other members to go the pc linux way.

Well done: Mint is an instinctive replacement for Win XP/ Win7 etc and so much more stable, secure and easy to use. Everyone I've installed it for has never looked back. It can even be themed to look nigh on identical if so desired.

Superb, great to see a bit of re-cycling and Linux keeping a computer alive.
I now keep Windows (XP, 7, 8 & 10) caged in virtual machines on my Linux host computer, just where they belong. I keep them just for cruel experimentation, you understand.

And you plug your camera into it and it sits there wondering wtf to do with it........ That was a major black mark in my book.

That's much more to do with the manufacturers refusing to give Linux support. Once the filthy Windows habit is kicked, it's easy to live without some things. Take out the card and plug that into a cheap card reader instead. It will work.

Never had a problem, either with an Argos cheapie or with herself's Nikon Bridge jobbie. Even if there ever is a problem, it probably isn't unique, so easily resolved by search and implement.

Which version of Mint did you install? Hope it was 13 or 17. No support for any of the others now. Play on Linux is pre-installed on 17 I seem to remember.

Nah - I'll stick with my battered old winxp install until someone develops a linux that behaves properly when you plug the camera into it & goes and finds its driver like windows does.

I'll keep trying iso's on my assorted old laptops until I find a one I can get on with.

In fact Im being more tempted by the experience of win8.1 atm which Im roadtesting with another old laptop atm (with the free classic shell added its much more usable - plus theres an alpha win10 disc lying around needing looking at too).

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

I used to use a pencil when I worked at the computer shop, and pens, and screwdrivers, and pliers, side-cutters, blanking plates, so, yeah, it's great knowing about computers... :D

I put Fedora on a pc without a wifi card, hooked up my Android to an usb port and turned on tethering. Guess what? It worked right out of the box, no need to install any drivers, configure routing or anything. Try that on a xp.
(Although I'm fed up with the almost daily updates and I don't really need the bleeding edge so my next try will probably be CentOS)
