Hello All,
I was wondering if any of you professional installers had any tips as to the easiest and or best way of getting a coax run from the dish to the inside of the house. (With minimum disruption)

My own install was easy, I just came up under the the eaves into the attic.

I'm doing an install for my dad in the coming weeks and this is not an option. Its a semi detached with an extension (Flat roof) out back where the dish will be installed, so I cant come directly into the attic.

Cheers,
C :)

There is the flat ribbon type connector that can be used in a closed window.

Or you will just have to drill a hole.

The losses on those are noticable but if only a fixed system on a strong sat then ok.
Route the cable and clip up as tidy as you can, lol :D :D

Thanks, but I'm not keen on using one of those ribbon connectors, the setup will be motorized. Exactly the same kit as my own.

Drilling a hole is not a problem, I just wondered if anyone wanted to comment on any quick ways of getting in. E.g. Perhaps something like getting around a PVC window frame by drilling in at angles to it from either side.

Best way is to drill an 8mm hole through the wall then seal it. Can be done using a 450mm length drill bit (assuming it's a standard wall). You'll be ok for a 30mtr run or so.

Time you've faffed about trying to find a quicker and easier way of doing it, a hole could have been drilled and sealed. Remember the drip loop.

When drilling the hole... as you push the drill on the hammer setting... make sure you dont push too hard when nearly through.

As putting all your weight on the drill as it comes through, sometimes brings the face of the brick off!! meaning your left with a big ugly hole, instead of a neat one size of the drill bit :)

hope that makes sense lol

Im just about to put my new system in and will go through the wall.
My question is, should I just come through the wall and into the reciever, or for a neater job put a socket on the wall and then a short length from socket to the reciever? With a motorised system would the extra connection with the wall socket cause me problems with signal loss or motor control?
I will be changing my reciever to HD in the future.
Thanks for your help

Putting the cable straight through the wall into the receiver is the best from a technical viewpoint. If you must make it neater, try an F plug joiner behind a blanking plate with a hole drilled in it.

and when you drill through the wall best to drill from the outside in and drill through the compo joint makes a neat hole
if you go from the inside out 9 times out of 10 you end up going through the middle of the outside brick and blowing the face of the brick and looking a right mess

As long as you don't drill through a mains socket :-rofl2

I always drill inside to out as not to blow a 12 inch section of internal plaster off.

I agree, drilling from outside in has more potential for disaster than inside out, plus more chance of it not coming out where you want it, or catching a power cable. I have on occasions offered the customer the use of my drill when they have insisted that the hole be drilled from outside in. ;)

There are certain types of brick where it is impossible not to blow the face, as the facing is too hard to drill through if you take the drill off hammer.

As putting all your weight on the drill as it comes through, sometimes brings the face of the brick off!!

And the drill chuck will slam into the plaster, inside if you dont ease off!

Ive been drilling outside in for 20 years now and prefer it to any inside out, unless you have an abundance of blast covers.

tape measure and some tape on drill bit turn hammer off, just before hitting plaster and hey presto nice neat hole.

and have only hit 1 pipe in all that time and that was a plastic one

its all a matter of experience , but each to his own

I have in the past put the cable through air-bricks and up through floorboards on older houses.

I too have used this method on my own house ..the air bricks being lower than the floorboards..
This assumes the house in question has a wood floor and air bricks ..
like my 1910 terraced..
..and that you have access to the crawl space under the floor..

In my opinion drilling outside in is a recepie for disaster. Not only is there a risk of hitting cables and pipes, but if the plaster on the inside is in a bad way you stand a good chance of pulling a good chunk of plaster off the wall.

If you can use a precussion drill rather than a hammer drill for normal brickwork as they are a little less aggressive and don't tend to blow out as much. Use a good quality bit too as it will make a big differance.

For a really neat job, especially if several recievers are being installed you can always put the cable in conduit on the outside. I have done this a couple of times when the customer wants the install to be exceptionally neat. You can also put up a false downpipe to hide vertical runs.

It all really depends how far you want to go with it :)
