EHT team members haven't revealed what the result is, but an NSF media advisory described it as "groundbreaking." So it's not outlandish to speculate that the project may have succeeded in its chief goal, and that we may be treated to a spectacular image of a black hole's silhouette.

Or more likely it's going to be somewhat disappointing.

Saw this on the news this morning - certainly seems like a breakthrough. Whether it's just going to be a black picture, aka Malevich, remains to be seen.

As light is unable to travel out of a black hole we are unlikely to see anything at all of the object only the contrast against the backdrop

The best images of what a black hole would look like were created for the 2014 film Interstellar.

Interstellar black hole Gargantua

But even this was exaggerated for effect in the film as images produced from then scientific knowledge were not dramatic enough. The early images produced were deemed too faint and were beefed up for the screen. However, the original image looked like this:

Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy m87.
It measures 40 billion km across - three million times the size of the Earth - and has been described by scientists as "a monster".
The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world.

I feel my life has been dramatically enriched by seeing a blurry doughnut in the flesh.

Meanwhile 40 years ago.
