70870125105__83DE5BC6-00C6-4CEF-B26F-A52CB4A5AB45.jpegWell, after months of searching eBay and Gumtree, speaking to stores on the continent and being horrified at the shipping costs, I have finally found a replacement for my Gibby 85cm.

It’s a 1m Orbital, pretty sure it’s Alu as it’s lighter than the Gibby.

The guy chucked in a stab motor which won’t move and a galvanised wall bracket. That stab looks ancient and can’t hear the motor going so think it’s dead.

The dish is in excellent condition but unfortunately, the shop that sold it in Birmingham decided to brand it and I really didn’t like it. I gave the sticker a blast with a hair dryer and pealed it off but it’s pulled the paint in one spot and left a horrible sticky residue. Not sure if the residue would impact the signal?

What’s the best way of buffing it up so it doesn’t look such a mess? I have read up on painting them and no metallic can be used.

Is there a spray or paint that I can use that is ideal for the job?

And also, how do I get this sticky off without taking the paint with it.

I've used WD40 to clean off glue residue left by badges/stickers on cars/vans. Can't say it won't stain or remove the paint on the dish though.

White spirit should remove the sticky

I’ve tried WD, it won’t budge.

If it removes the paint it’s no big deal as it needs painting anyway. Metal is exposed currently.

Great call, the sticky is off!

Any paint advice from anyone?
Any non metallic matt spray paint should suffice, as long as it's suitable for exterior use..

If the dish is Aluminium it might need a special metals primer or an etch primer rather than a standard primer?

You could clean it up with a scotchbrite pad and soapy water then rinse and dry.
After that you could spray it with Halfords etch primer which is grey, very similar to the colour it is now.
I am not sure if you would need a finishing coat, I have left stuff finished in etch primer outside and its still good a few years later.

It must be circa 15 years old judging by the motor and LNB on it. The paint has chipped off it around the rim in places and it has not rusted.

My old 1m Orbital was only 8 years old when I gave it away and it was starting to rust where the paint had been damaged. This one is also incredibly light too so I think it is Alu.

Not sure if @Channel Hopper knows if there is a way of telling if they're steel or alu?

I was thinking of just using a primer. It is tucked away so it can't be seen so I am not particularly bothered about it looking good - just want to protect it. When I move house, i'll re-paint it to match the wall or fence colour.

After removing the sticker residue, this is what I am left with to touch up……

I have left the sticker residue on the metal for now, just incase it is steel.

What difference does it make if the dish is steel or aluminium re the sticker residue?

It's more of a strong glue / hardened paste.

With the mad storms we have had recently it won't take long for the exposed steel to start to rust, if it's not ALU.

Don't think Orbital galvanised the steel ones.

That appears to be a common issue with the Stabs out there, post a picture of the serial number when you get a chance as it can be added to the database.

As for an Orbital 1m, you could have travelled and collected the new(old stock) one here.

The Orbital came up locally and as the motor was included I thought I could move that on for £20-£30………until I tested it!

It feels pretty well built I must say.

Did anyone work out why they were failing?

You appear to have an original version, must be two decades old.

Worth opening to check the carcass before rebadged for (re)sale over here.

What logo was on the dish face as that might also be worth something.

(oh wait !)

Wow, can you tell the build date off the serial?

The dish sticker was advertising the shop who originally sold it.

On a side note, the LNB, also dead was red 0.1db with a green cap. Any ideas what it could be?
