My internal harddrive packed up after less than 3 months, when I took it out of the box it was really hot, much too hot for it to have worked correctly.

So before just replacing the internal drive, I thought it would be better to fit a external drive.

Can anyone explain in simple terms how I can do this?

Would it record as the internal drive did (Before it died)

thanks in advance

Why not just replace the old drive and forget about the USB connection, somehow I don't think it would work.
If the Dreambox is anything like the Topfield 5800 PVR you can just replace the Hard Drive the GUI should then allow you to format the new drive.
And surely it's still under guarantee.
Also do a search for Dreambox forums I'm sure there's plenty of them.

Have you considered mounting an NFS export on another linux box as an HDD - mines in another room so it's silent and there's no heat problem in the 7025.
