Hi there,

I do not understand if we watch it FTA.

We are opening up all 4 Sky Sports channels on Sunday the 26th of September so that you can experience Sky Sports for yourself.
To enjoy the day all you need to do is tune in!

There's a wide range of sport on across the day including live coverage of two Barclays Premier League games, Spanish Football,
the Tour Championship and European Golf on Sky Sports 1 & 2, SPL,
Rugby League and NFL on Sky Sports 3 & 4.

... more details in official web site

They will be removing any encryption flag from those channels. They can be viewed in the clear from 6am on Sunday 26th to 6am on Monday 27th September as documented in the above link.

ok but why do they write the below?

Who can watch the Sky Sports Open Day?

All Sky TV, Virgin Media TV, UPC TV, Talk talk TV , Velocity 1, Small World TV and Magnet TV customers that do not subscribe to a Sky Sports package. Freeview, BT Vision and TUTV customers will not be able to watch."

The channels wont be fta. Do you seriously think Sky would give their Premium Sport content away to the whole of Europe?? They will be available to all Sky sunscribers - encryption levels will almost certainly just be dropped down to family mix levels - like they have done in previous years.

It's my understanding that this is for existing Customers only, so the Encryption will remain ............... that being why the rest of us won't get access.

They did something similar a few years ago to tempt those of us with FreesatfromSky Cards to get a Sub. by giving us a moths "Sky World".

I don't know how it was achieved, though .................. more likely to be a mass time constrained alteration to Card permissions.

And I meant "months", not "moths" in the previous Post.

Not Edited, 'cos "moths" is funnier.

Yes, a downgrade of the channel(s) to the same as the basic Sky package for the duration. The headends of VM and cards in the TUTV boxes would open as any basic channel.

I wonder if Monday's encryption will be the same as Saturday's - or whether they'll use the opportunity to make some 'upgrades'.

Well that depends whether Sky drop down to family pack or ftv level. I very much doubt it will be ftv level, but you never know..

Ah just re-read the web site details:

Who can watch the Sky Sports Open Day?

All Sky TV, Virgin Media TV, UPC TV, Talk talk TV , Velocity 1, Small World TV and Magnet TV customers that do not subscribe to a Sky Sports package.

That says to me family pack level. FSFS viewers arent Sky customers.

so why do they do that if those channels are visible mainly by sky card owners and with a low level program? They need a new marketing director ;-0

No - its a clever marketing tool. Its targetting folk like me who are on the one to six mix. Some of the folk who see it will decide to move up to the sports channels.

Dunno the exact figures and I cant be bothered to look them up but ballpark figures - Im paying Sky 25 quid a month for the six mix. If I decide I want to watch overpaid poseurs prancing around on a manicured cabbage patch every Saturday I'll be paying them 35 quid instead. If ten thousand people like me decide to sub to the sports thats a hundred thousand a month or over a million quid a year extra income - just for the trouble of having a day pass.

Sky have no interest in fta satters - you wont bring them any extra income!

It might be true but having an american culture of doing business, I would invest in new customers, not in upgrades of the existing one's.

Edit: not to mention the sport events chosen for that day....How can I be attracted by that? But this is only my opinion and taste ;-)

Ah but to attract NEW subscribers costs money - they have to be provided with a new HD digibox and card - even at trade prices thats costing well over a hundred quid per new subscriber. Getting me to upgrade doesnt cost them a bent cent.

Yes in the long term you grow a business by new customers, but this promotion is an easy money making exercise. Some overpaid poseur probably needs a new ferrari :D
