harddrive sieze up

I've recentlly mounted a 160gb seagate harddrive in my DB but every time i bring it out of standby (to record or view my pics or listen to music) it siezes up the DB which means i have to re-boot the DB to get it to work, so basically the harddrive siezes the DB when it spins up, any idea's pep's.

Ok , please can you explain the correct proceedure for mounting a harddrive, i just popped it in and formatted the drive and that was it, should i have done something else.

I have had a lot of problems with recent Seagate Barracuda 160Gb and 320Gb hard disks with Sky Plus boxes. They seem to require more power than older disks; more than the Sky + can supply.

Just an off-the-wall suggestion, but could this be what's happening with your DB. If you can borrow something like a Maxtor or WG 40Gb or 80Gb disk, try installing that. If it works, then we know to avoid Seagate Barracudas with Dreamboxes as well as Sky + boxes.

From memory of a much earlier thread, it was advised to use disks with a spin rate of 5400, I guess that they draw less power that the 7200 versions, there is also a thread somewhere about adding a separate power supply for the harddrive.

Have you tried a different image?

I once had the same problem, cant remember which image it was though

Use some add on powersupplies it helps to support the built in one and prevents startup probs with HDDs.

We've got them in Germany but I'm sure you can get them in UK as well.

I've just checked out that link. The postage to Spain is 5 Euros - so I imagine it would be the same to the UK.

Just a shame they don't do one for the 7025!

I couldn't find an additional powersupply for ther 7025 but obviously there seem to be two different versions exiting in the 7025. There is the normal and the "new version" which can be recognized with the green transformer in the middle.

Have you got more information?

I'm trying another route. I've ordered what's described as a HARD DISK DRIVE 12V + 5V AC Adapter Power Supply from Ebay. Even with postage it's only about 5 Euros - GBP3,50 - so I'm not going to lose much if it doesn't work.

I'll post here once I've tried it.

I hope you got the right one. There are two versions on the market. The "better" one poweres down when the box is switched off or the disk runs into powersave otherwise the disk spinns the whole time. I'd call it annoying :-)

Did you have a look which built in version you've got?

Other solution: 2.5" Laptop disks. They consume definetly less current.

I've got the poorer one. My box is on continuously, and with my present arrangement the disk spins the whole time.

I'm not wasting much if it's useless.

The 2,5 laptop disk is a good idea, but I'd have to buy one in whereas I have a considerable number of 40Gb PATA 3,5" IDE disks lying around from where I've put bigger hard disks into Sky Plus boxes.

I also have problems with the 7000S (Blue LCD) with Seagate 160GB HD with picture jitter while recording.
I thought of replacing it with a laptop HD but the connectors are different and I needed a connector adapter/converter in order to get it properly connected, and this converter was hard to find locally so I am just waiting for a chance when I see one in one of the shops.
Also I need an adapter to mount it mechanically.
Do you have any info on such converters and mechanical adapters ? Thanks.

I think that I will buy a 4 GB USB stick and record some programs during the evening instead. There are 2 more USB connectors on the 4-way USB hub.
This should be good for those jittery channels.
The trouble is, I don't know how to setup the stick to record to my current 1GB stick. Records only with HDD at the moment.

The DB will record to whatever is mounted as /media/hdd. By default, that's the hard disk. Your USB drive will be mounted as /media/usb.

Swap them over (they're only labels), mount your USB device (/dev/usb/....) to /media /hdd and your hard disk to /media/usb (or even make a new directory such as /media/hdd2 and mount it to that).

To come round full circle, as long as it's operational and capable of doing so, whatever is mounted as /dev/hdd will be recorded to.

I used to mount a drive on my PC as /media/hdd and record to that, but found it less reliable than a proper dedicated HDD.

I still don't know how to mount. Would appreciate a tip in this direction.

I created a subfolder /movie in the /var/mnt/usb/movie
My HDD has already a subfolder /movie with recordings and I am a little bit worried that if I start changing names then I might loose the recordings unintentionally.
With blue button > Extras / Settings > record I get a popup with the following:
record location
/var/mnt/hdd/movie
But it doesn't mention the /var/mnt/usb/movie as an option.

My problem is that I don't have a 7000, I have a 7025, so things may be in slightly different places. Secondly, I do all my configuration via Telnet, as I'm reasonably experienced with Linux. Therefore any explanation I'm going to give will be about how to do things using Telnet.

The list of devices to be mounted at boot time is held in the file /etc/fstab. This lists the devices to be mounted and where to mount them. That's the secret to recording elsewhere.

You may find this

Also, it would pay anybody interesting in configuring their DB in non standard ways to learn the basic Linux commands and what the main configuration files do. I think it's much easier editing directly than via any DB interface.
