HDD failing?

I've got a 320GB Maxtor disk installed in my 7025. It's given two years reasonable service until recently. Lately however if my 7025 is booted from cold or deep standby the disk won't start up. The 7025 will however boot up but without a HDD present.

The workaround I have right now is to do a warm reboot of Enigma and this always results in the HDD working after the reboot. Ideally I like to put the box into deep standby at night to save power however recently I just keep it in normal standby so recordings won't fail.

Should I junk the disk and replace it with a newer one or is there something I can do to get the disk going again? It strikes me that two years isn't that long a lifespan for a HDD....

Is your HDD a 5400rpm disk? If it's a 7200rpm it may be overheating.

I'm never going to buy Maxtor again - p.o.s. grr...

Yes, the disk is a Maxtor STM3320820A - just checked and it's 7200 rpm. So I guess I had better get a slower but maybe bigger drive...

A lot of hard drives come with 3 years warranty and this one is no exception. However, it's one of those catch22 situations; how much do you have to spend to return the drive (that you can now replace for less than 50 quid) for a 'free' replacement.

The other issue is that there aren't many 5400 rpm drives out there with the sort of capacity that 7200 rpm drives offer. The biggest 5400 rpm drive I can find on eBay is 120 GB, well under half the capacity of my existing drive. It seems that the 7200 rpm drives are pretty much the standard these days.

What disk drives are in use out there that are reliable and have a reasonablly large capacity?
