Hi folks,

I wonder if there is anyone who can possibly help with a question about seeing broadcasts of opera performances relayed to Europe.

I have a friend who will be moving soon to Europe (Spain to be exact) who has been told by a fellow opera fan that he has a setup that can receive opera simulcasts on his home Sat system. I am guessing it will possibly on Eutelsat or something but have no clue about which satellite it might be, who is broadcasting it, whether a subscription might be needed etc etc!

Is there anyone that knows any information that might help? He wants to get set up with a motorised dish system down in Almeria in Spain so he can pick up Freesat but also have the option for getting access to these opera broadcasts too.

Thanks for any ideas/help in advance!

Cliff

Broadcasts of Metropolitan Opera Live in HD are almost always on Intelsat 10-02 (1W) at 2 or 3 regular frequencies (simultaneously):

11468,V,12890
11486,V,12890
11531,V,12890

Transmissions are FTA. I don't know if those frequencies are easily receivable in Spain. Another frequency that was used during the first two perfomances of Met Live this season was 11092,H,12890 of Telstar 12 (15W), easily receivable in Spain.

Just looked on this listing for 10-02 and don't see the channel mentioned - which one would it be that the shows would be broadcast on?

Its not a regular broadcast channel - its a feed frequency (feeds = irregular, transient & used as required)

Thanks for that, not being au fait with all of this that will help when I explain to my friend who wants to receive the broadcasts. I see different channels mentioned linked with differing forms of encryption also. Is it possible to get a card to via those channels or are they country specific?

You can, but if you have to use third party sellers rather than buying in the country of origin you pay a handsome premium to the middle man.

As far as I know there isn't any regular channel (like Mezzo Live HD, Classica, Brava HDTV, etc) that rebroadcasts live the performances of "Met Live in HD". There are only two options, either you find a close-by movie theater that participates in this program*, or receive those feeds (which are very regular, they don't change easily frequency, SR, polarization or satellite).

Btw, next performance is this Saturday, November 19 at 17:55 GMT, with Philip Glass's "Satyagraha".

*for Spain you may check here,

He will be living in Mojacar in Costa Almeria and although Roquetas is listed as a place to see them in a cinema the long drive would be a PITA so a friend in the UK had told him it was possible to see them via satellite hence the exploration of possibilities on his behalf. He isn't technical at all and I am not THAT much better but I do comprehend a bit about how to interpret the replies - especially the helpful ones! ;)

It "should" be the same unless they`ve found a cheaper/more reliable/better quality service

Until someone more "in the know" comes along I`ll hazard a guess and say they`ll be the same this time round but check on the above freqs about 15 to 30 mins before the advertised start time and see if the promo is running

Very interesting thread! Any chance to receive operas from european theatre, too? For example: La Scala in Milan, Opera in Paris and so on? Also interesting in classical recitals and concerts. Please post any possible live coverage here. Thank you to all!

There are some times feeds for other permormances, concerts, dance, theater, but they are sporadic and not so easy to catch quickly. On the other hand the schedule of the Met Op "Live in HD" is well known months before, so are the feeds (more or less).

Anyway, next performance of the Met is this Saturday at 19:00 CET (18:00 GMT), with Tosca.

Thank you for your reply. It would be very interesting to maintain updated this thread for live classical music feeds (if available and known).
