C H shield bug as Skomedal says but what sort? I'd go for Parent Bug Elasmucha grisea found in most of the British Isles. Feed mostly on the fruits and leaves of plants. (check your raspberries!)

We were in Beaumaris on Angelsey for the night and we watched the beautiful sunset followed by the harvest moon rising

A Poplar Hawk-moth, my sister's place in France is surrounded by poplars, not noticed one before, but I guess they are mostly up in the trees.

Went for a walk today to enjoy the unusually warm weather we've been having at this time of year for Finland and saw an upset snake (adder?) hissing away in the middle of the forest path and some weird fungus growing off a fir tree.

Thanks, yes the few adders I've seen in the past have been lighter and browner in colour. This one was quite small and black so when curled up on the path it looked like a dog turd until I got closer and it started hissing...

I'd go for Great Mullein Verbascum thapsus. Distinguished by velvety leaves even in their first year when they appear as rosettes without flowering spikes. They are flammable when dry and have been used for lamp wicks. Range throughout europe.

Adder it is Vipera berus. Don't worry about the colour as they range from redish brown through to all black.

Thanks bim think you have placed a correct name to this plant, have in the meantime sent a copy to the natural history museum ( biology dept. ) in oslo, hope they can confirm your suggestion.
