Just rescanned the old IDTV and there are two new channels in the listing - BT1 and BT2.

Both require a smart card.

THey'll be for the Sky Sports 1 and 2 channels (BT/TUTV). Not sure what encryption they're using until I check Transedit (can't get that mux at present, weak signal, were on last time I looked).

Yes they have been on Winter Hill for a couple of weeks, just assumed they were for Sky sports one and two via BT, a package they announced a couple of weeks ago

Hi Llew, I believe CAID 0100 is Mediaguard 2 (AKA SECA 2). This makes sense as that's what TUTV currently use.

Thanks, tbh I was surprised the ten year old (tube) TV found anything new, as anything on (or just over) the horizon is likely to be HD, and therefore outside the scope of the circuitry.

BT's offering will be via ADSL over the telephone line.

The ones on terrestrial TV will be TUTV's version.

Its TopUpTV offering Sk*y Sports 1 and 2 for £29.99 per month. Bit steep ?

Although I am thinking of ditching my Sk*y package (£52) and going Freeview and the above.

Okay its not Sk*y Sports in HD but for what we watch will save us £22 a month?

You should make sure your TV is fully compatible with the PCMCIA module supplied with the card before you sign up. Go check with the CI+ standards.

Additionally check what you sign up for is exactly what Sky Sports offers on their own channels (but in SD) over the full term of your subscription, as there is a risk of the broadcaster moving on to different content once the contract is in place.

Wrong, the channels 42/42 are used for BT Vision too. The BroadBand isnt used to transmit these channels to the BTV box..

That would mean that BT's Freeview box will have to be TUTV compatible, i.e. a card slot or CI at the least. I have never seen one of their Freeview boxes - can anyone confirm they have this provision?

The Vision+ box does have a card slot (used for the older ESPN cards). I believe the incoming chanel is now ADSL as the channel can be opened up without a card if you choose the right package.

Well I have a box here working with channels 41 and 42 and espn. A card is used in my box to receive these channels if it's removed guess what the channels go off.
The encryption for the card is sent not over the airwaves bt send it down their broadband lines to the btv box.

Which makes sense if you have an older style ESPN card and Vision box that has been updated.

If the on-demand system is active (through BT broadband rather than via the aerial) there is no real need for a card, unless it is an older system.
