New installation Motorised Dish location?

I would like to install a motorised Dish after successfuly installing one at my parents property. Unfortunatley we dont have a direct south facing wall but I believe there is a potential spot (See red X of attached plan), This is a Hip Roof (Sloping ends).

I have been up the lader and used my android mobile phone satelite finder app to see if i can see the arc of satellites, they all seem visible from this position (on the corner eave).

I just wonderd if the roof could affect the signal in any way even though the satellites appear to be in sight?

The ridge is always going to be your worst enemy in this situation, but fortunately it lines up more or less with the highest part of the satellite arc.

As long as you put up a sufficiently large pole on the wall brackets (a steel scaffold pole is best) then you can adjust the eventual height of the system to compensate.
Make sure the T+K brackets are placed far enough apart, or maybe use two pairs of them.

As long as line of sight is possible, the roof should have no effect. However, in the proposed location, the dish will often have to go higher than you'd like so that the LNB/arm is not physically obstructed by the roof. Above the gutter on the right hand side may be a better position.

If this is for a Ku band motorized system then I find 2” and 1 ½” ridged electrical conduit works great for this type of install.
The 2” is used as the ground mount, if the location has a concrete walkway or pad a 2” pipe flange is used to hold things down to the ground, drilling several holes (3 to 4) for hold down bolts and a wall mount to keep the main mast away from the roof eves is the first start.

On top of the 10 foot section of conduit (ridged conduit is used as it is threaded and strong enough to hold up to very high wind loads) is a 2” to 1 ½” bell reducer (found at your local plumbing supply) this accommodates the inch and a half conduit.

The top section can be cut to what ever length you need; standard unistrut mounting hardware can be used to hold it to the wall, or a custom mount can be built at a local welding shop.

Easier available here in the UK , as already mentioned are T+K brackets and a scaffold pole. Most houses are made of brick, so not usually necessary to rest it on the ground either, unless the dish is greater than 1m in size maybe, and then a thicker pole 3 inches or greater diameter would usually be used.

If it falls over like that I wouldn't use it for a dish...LOL

I use the rigid conduit as its stronger (and cheaper, here that is) then standard steel pipe, you need a hydraulic bender to make a dent in the big stuff.

Scaffold tube is less than a quid a foot, it has a 4mm wall diameter and plenty strong enough and galvanised. Of course, it has to be fixed to the wall securely though.

Lol, did you hear the reference to being put up by cowboys in the vid?

That's why it fell over.

Thanks for all your posts (excuse the pun)

Think I may opt for the Scaffold pole and mount it to the wall, hopfully the brackets will hold it away sufficiently from the edge of the roof but definatly sounds like its going to be plenty strong enough to support the dish.

I will probably use an 80cm dish and mount it high enough for the LNB arm to clear the roof

Now I can see there is a chance it will work I can go ahead and purchase the equipment, I will post how i got on as soon as I fix it up.

If you get snow, you might want to make sure it's not too low to the roof, (if the LNB is pointing back at the roof) you don't want to have problems with snow blocking the LNB.

All I worry about here is the wood peckers taking out the LNB eye to hide acorns.

Not sure if we get woodpeckers here,LOL, but have noticed that sometimes have found small nuts and stuff inside feedhorns when the cover has been damaged. Wondered ow they got there.:confused

We have serious woodpecker problems around here, my Invacom LNB quit working one day, I look and saw water dripping out of it, when I got it down I found it's eye cover was destroyed.

Be leave it or not Invacom fixed it under warranty, they said the birds couldn't peck thru the eye cover, they didn't be leave it so I mailed it to them, a week later I got a new one in the mail, for free, I also glued a piece of Rhino tough bullet proof over it to be on the safe side.
