OTOH, when I was at Leeds Uni in the late 1960s, it took me 3 months to begin to understand "broad Geordie", having been accustomed to Southern England "English" upto to that point (Was not only "foreigners" that didn't talk "English" English then ;))

Were there lots of Geordies at Leeds Uni then?....'cause Leeds isn't near to Newcastle...

Not a lot, but there were a couple of them who - to me - were unintelligible for quite a long time.

OTOH, I was born and brought up in Oxfordshire - and that's a lot further from Leeds than is Newcastle :).

That's what happened with my sisters house when she took up British gas on the offer of the cavity insulation that is the white chippens injected into the cavity space via pilot holes. Bathroom went blue mouldy like something out a slum landlord program!

Yes, CWI has developed a widespread poor reputation as the result of dodgy installation practices leaving far too many people worse off than they were before. It's one of those well-intentioned exercises that is offered cheaply, or free, yet can ultimately come with a cost.

Fortunately, it rarely gets sufficiently cold to justify putting the heating on up here anyway, and there's nowt wrong with a few draughts!

Went out for the day to Vitre, in Brittany. They are renovating the courtyard stonework on the chateau and I spied this impressive scaffolding :

In the 11th to 16th Centuries , "Real Castles" were built both to repel potential enemies and to impress them, and others, that "I am the Boss of this-here area, and don't you ever think anything else because I have the money and power to make sure that happens!". I think that the one in Brittany meets the first "criteria", whereas the last one (where is it?) probably meets both of them - Both "Medieval" and "Modern" "Bling", and especially to now "impress" the "modern masses", with all those glitzy banners and so on, because that's what they, unfortunately, expect.:(

Good contrast though!

Kind of you to say that - but I have "dissed" a few posts here (and there!) in the past by accident, and so now just being "polite"! Anyway, still "bling for the masses"";)
