Unless the HDD is old it will just be a SATA drive + USB adapter in a single package. If it is older then it will be an IDE drive + USB adapter.

I do have one receiver that when viewing a signal that is just above lock will break up when recording to an external SD card, presumably the SD card or its reader is sending interference down the USB cable into the receiver. This is why I asked if you have tried recording NHK World as that signal should be much stronger with it being on a Europe beam.
Sorry for tardy response but been away- Well I tried NHK and its just the same. Also I get very good HDD signal strength for all HD channels with excellent quality as well. However I have narrowed things down a bit. I only get recording errors when recording from an HD channel where the source material is also in HD. If the programme being recorded is an older or non HD one then the recordings all work fine - even from the same HD channel. I ran a test where two programmes were recorded back to back from BBC1 HD - the first programme was not flagged as HD but the second was, and only the first worked OK. It seems it has to be the combination of the HD channel and the source material which affects the recordings. I even tried using an old PATA HDD and despite its age it worked fine!!! So it seems there is something subtle in the differing technologies of SSD and HDD which is the cause of the issue rather then signal strength etc. A real shame as it would be much better for me to have a non mechanical drive connected as it is silent and could be left plugged in 24-7!!!
