I recently got an E Mail from Amazon telling me about their new MP3 Cloud service and advising me that a goodly number of Albums I'd bought from them on CD were now freely available as MP3.

Now, being a Luddite of the first water, I've never used a portable MP3 player, so I took the opportunity to lash out £10 for one from eBay.

Whilst awaiting delivery, I thought I'd start downloading these free MP3s from the Cloud.

But no: Only in Windows and Mac can one download an entire Album in one go.

In Linux, one must do it Track by Track.

S*d this for a game of soldiers, I thunk, and I found instead a wonderfully simple and light App. called ripperx so I could start producing my own MP3s from the CDs.

It's really simple to use and has Registration-free access to an online CDDB Resource which has not failed me yet.

As for Amazon, I deleted the bally lot, apart from Val Doonican's Greatest Hits (which was one we had bought as a gift for my long departed Mother in Law) which I did actually download track by track.

Amazon asked for Feedback, so they got both barrels.

But as for ripperx, I strongly recommend it.

Expecting the personal player tomorrow and do have a slight concern it won't exactly be Plug and Play in Linux Mint, but no doubt chaps on the Interweb thingy know how to overcome any snags.

Edit: Hmm. I see only leading Capital Letters are allowed in Topic titles >> CDs has become Cds. At least they're not Cd's ........... !

It really is the business >> The only Config required is to edit the Default Path for storing MP3 creations.

After that, it's just Scan >> CDDB >> Go.

Sorted.

When you flash up ripperx first time it asks you if you want to create the default destination folder.

Don't!

I did and it creates a folder called "." which I later had to find and delete. (The pre-defined default path is "/.")

So decline, go to config, amend destination as required then take it from there.

It's pretty obvious , though.

No great shakes if you forget and later have to delete a pointless folder.

I need not have worried: Player arrived, plugged it into Laptop, auto-detected and simple Drag and Drop for files.

Brilliant kit for £10, with MP3, eBook Reader, FM Radio (works very well), Video and much more, with inbuilt 8GB storage and a Lion Battery.

Well happy

Actually, the success report above was with Crunchbang.

I've now plugged it into Mint and it does the full works >> Detects it as a Digital Audio Player rather than Mass Storage and interfaces with Banshee to manipulate files, including auto-sync if required.

Meanwhile, several weeks later ................

Just finished Ripping the entire Tivu Towers CD collection and happy to report that out of over 300 Albums (A good many with multiple CDs), a mere 9 Tracks failed every form of error correction.

Happy bunny.

Just need to find the time to listen to them!

I did all mine a few years ago, it's quite satisfying knowing they are all stored on an HD and accessible at any time at a click of a mouse. Not that I've listen to them much... but like obscure satellite TV channels, I know they are there and that is the main thing.

Yes, indeed.

Also acts as an element of proof of ownership of the original Albums in the event of Burglary.

That said, mine have been catalogued on a Spreadsheet for years, after the first Mrs.Tivu was Burgled and the Media Collection was an area where the Insurer quibbled.

Having just tried both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions of RipperX on my upgraded Mint 16 "Petra" Laptop, VLC reports "Unable to Read Input) and locks up.

Existing MP3s play fine.

After much Googling, the return of effort became too much, so I'm now trying Sound Juicer and Asunder.

Sound Juicer is fast but doesn't produce a Play List

Asunder is more flexible (especially in offering different CDDB Sources) and nicer looking, does produce a Play List but is slower than Sound Juicer.

It also requires the LAME MP3 Encoding Library, but that's available in Software Manager anyway, so not a problem.

As I've done the bulk of my Collection already and am only doing newly purchased CDs, I'm going to bin Sound Juicer and stick with Asunder.

A sure sign the developer has been at it for too many years. :-buttkick
