I was out and about this afternoon.Found myself up near the Selkirk main transmitter and noticed 3 massive satellite dishes in the grounds. They have to be at least 2m in diameter and are pointing to at least 2 different satellites.

Any ideas as to which satellites they are pointing at and why such whopping great monstrosities are required ?

(Im jealous and want them in the garden!)

Hmm suppose it does rain a lot up here!

Found a picture - two of the dishes are pointing out to the south east but for some reason one is pointing south west!

There was also a fourth one on the building when this was taken, although that may just have been hidden from view today

Channel 5 in PowerVu is on 27W (11665MHz).

Also on 16E with others as data channels (11634, 11659, 11680).

2m is not 'massive'.

Are they receive only dishes or ones for both receive and transmission ?

Receive only for a cable station is standardised with 2m to 2.4m dishes, not just for rain fade, but the requirements for sending non standard encrypted data.

Once you are up to a 7/8 FEC to covering transmission losses, the dish size can increase by some 60%. Add to that the correct cross polar rejection, HD broadcasts, MPEG 4:2:2 transmissions and a few others to boot, 2m dishes are small fry.

A pity the cable company eventully sends the stuff to your subscriber box down a manky bit of pipe, using pits and splitters from the US days of VHF, with scant regard to signal strength as it arrives, nor how it gets from there to the screen.

Theres no cable round here - the nearest is the best part of 40 miles away :D - this has to be all for retransmission off the mast.

Therefore this install is likely receive only.

Having spoken to a man who installs these dishes, they now use 2 dishes for DAB feeds into the local transmiters, one main dish for the main feed and another dish on a backup satellite location, just incase its ever needed. Reduncancy from the outset :)
