Sky is set to unveil its next generation Sky STB on November 18th. A cryptic invite to a product launch invites journalists to “see how we’re changing TV again”, and introduces the hashtag #SetTVFree.

Tentatively dubbed “SkyQ”, the STB is reported to offer multi-screen viewing so family members can each watch different shows on varying screens, allowing up to 4 different channels to be watched (or recorded) simultaneously. The box should also offer live TV and catch-up streaming in the same place so jumping between the two will appear seamless. The box will be 4K ready and will also support HDR and HFR to make it future-proof.

HFR and HDR can go take a short walk off a long pier... I watched The Hobbit in the cinema in HFR and I nearly threw up. My in-laws have a fancy Samsung which has "smoothing" crap turned on and it's the same effect.

Watch out Sky – this new TV box lets you skip adverts and record content in 4K.

At the moment Virgin Media hold the exclusive UK rights to Tivo distribution (if I remember rightly) so unless VM drop Tivo and force the new Liberty Cable all singing all dancing box on us the UK won't get this box

When Liberty took over at VM there was talk of all their operations in the EU (UK, Ireland, The Netherlands and so on) becoming harmonised to use the same equipment and offer the same services across the board but I don't think anything come of it UK wise as the VM brand is still quite strong here

To be fair I wish they'd drop the Tivo and go for the Horizon box as it looks the dogs doo dahs with its home streaming Horizon - Liberty Global

I can't see any broadcaster bundling the new Tivo as the advertisers would have kittens and it would be near on useless if all broadcasts had that HD copy protection thing activated (unless it has a built in protection stripper)

I have to admit though, if it does work in the UK its going on my Christmas list

Unfortunately I cant get VM here, it was great at my old home never missed a beat, I was on 50mb and it would download at that speed day and night using newsgroups.

Reading about the sky Q box its not clear whether is going to be a streaming box/satellite ?, ive been looking at this range of satellite boxes, but I am waiting to see what sky bring out first.

I still refuse to pay for HD. I think it might be a while before I get to use a SkyQ box although it does sound cool and useful.

From the quick read i had you have to have there BB ?, if so no chance for 12 months for me, I would like to bet the box is made by this company, they have a few nice boxes that do the same thing £300 for the one i was looking at.

Looks like the box uses a wholeband LNB, possibly two feeds, one vertical and one Horizontal, then the boxes 12 tuners will sort things out internally. Sounds like a nice piece of kit, but for people like me, who are not really interested in 4K and only have two boxes, overkill.

Looks to me like they are using FBC tuners which are already in the Vu Solo 4K and an lnb change possible Unicable type LNB to feed the 2 inputs, its already confirmed that an LNB change will be required for the new box.

Oh if I need to go back to Sky Broadband then forget it, even less likely I'll use one. I didn't have a problem with Sky Broadband but I'd prefer to have a choice on who supplies my internet and at the moment it's not Sky. I suspect it might be a bit like when Sky launched their on demand it was at first only for Sky Broadband customers and then eventually rolled out to all ISPs - unless there's a good technical reason why this wouldn't happen.

Seems to be the consensus - how have they managed to send double the bandwidth down each cable?
