In the UK, Emergency Access is now enabled for all VOIP providers to the universal 999 number.

And, for new sign-ups, you cannot activate your VOIP account unless you have submitted verified contact details.

PS: My Broadband/ISP Services now come via Microwave Relay (I changed to that a week ago). As for jitter? Undetectable!

Run this test, anything under 6 mS is good.

Did this yesterday.

2mS

Not bad for the age of steam.

Nevertheless, the proof is in the pudding, and I've rigorously tested real hearing both ways innumerable times and it still remains clearer and louder than over copper. No echo, no noticeable missing packets. Nothing.

And at 1p/min to UK and most of the World, that's a great outcome.

Even though I work in IT, I have no idea what jitter is... er.. what is it?

Jitter

This is the difference between the minimum and maximum latency results of a ping test. It is useful to see how varied the latency results are so that network stability and broadband stability can be determined.

Within reason, latency is not an issue as long as whatever it is doesn't vary much. If it does, buggeration can ensue

Unhighlighted text is a lifted quote. Emboldened is my take on it!

It's what you get after that 10th cup of coffee, or your third jolt cola on an empty stomach.

Lol.

Just rang PlusNet to cease my ADSL service and they gave me a rebate of 80p!

So, the job is complete.

Old "BT" number mapped to my Voipfone Account just after noon today.

Have rigourously checked all is as I want it, outgoing and incoming.

Have proved Ringing for my BT Phone on the local Extension Wiring I've done (As mentioned early on, the Cisco SPA112 ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) won't ring a BT Phone without a Ringing Capacitor across the Port, somewhere).

DECT Phones work as before. No issues.

Voicemail is brilliant: Any missed calls (I deliberately missed one from SWMBO) are recorded for access either online, or via 1571, or via a .wav sound sent by E Mail.

SWMBO is super impressed with call quality and volume.

I did try configuring both Adapter Ports identically, but of course only one Port can register at any one time with such a configuration >> This means I can ring out from either Port but only one Port "rings" on incoming.

This is not a problem (The spare Port is really to allow two separate providers to be used, not the same provider twice!) as the device has a REN capability of 3. To which end, I've spent £1.09 on an RJ11 doubler for permanent use with all instruments on a single Port. As a stop gap, I've created an effective doubler by using a (now redundant!) ADSL microfilter. Works a treat, so the household system is now as it was on copper, but without the copper.

Just got to decide whether to stick with the US Ring Tones the Adapter delivers to the old BT Phone, or whether to change them to UK ones (or something else). Personally, I'm not bothered, but SWMBO might like something different.

Very nice, G! Actually worked out well for you.

Annoying for most others as you NEED a phone line to have Internet in the first place, which would generally defeat VOIP (yes, it's cheaper calls but..).

As I am sat in front of my computer all day anyway, I am utilising Skype, which works well.. and is cheap!

Not tried Skype, although my Sis-In-Law swears by it.

Just got to hope PlusNet don't fail at the last >> My copper line is active still, as the ADSL is still live owing to the 14 days notice required.

I've paid Line Rental up until 9 Mar anyway, so have got a bit of slack to correct any blunders on their part.

Next job is to employ the old ADSL Router as a WiFi Extender.

Most people's experience of VOIP is limited to Skype - or at least they think it is. When I phone from France and am quized about the quality of the call they can't believe that I'm in France. And that's a dedicated VOIP for you.

Just use a now disused ADSL filter as a mini-master socket, they'll provide the ringing capacitor to operate 3-wire BT/GPO phones... :)

Works for many 2-wire telephony things:

Like my Panasonic KX-T61610BE Phone system there, with three ADSL filters in operation there... :D

I did use one (but as a splitter): Didn't need it for Ringing as I've run a Master Socket , new Cable and an Extension socket separate from the BT Line (Ripped the old stuff out of their NTE5 Master and chucked it).

As you say, those filters have many uses. Which is just as well, as they seem to breed :-rofl2

I just use Skype for my personal and business use too. I have a Skype cordless phone that doesn't need a PC so it's "always on" and works very well, plus it's on my mobile and iPad too. All our family members have a Skype phone so we call each other for free (useful when you keep moving countries too). I have a London number registered as my business number and most of the time my clients don't realise I'm in Finland for 6 months of the year. The downside is a Skype UK phone number seems quite expensive at about £40 a year and I don't think you can port your own numbers over either (at least you couldn't when I bought my number).

I will pay £2.40 (inc VAT) per month for my (own) number to be hosted, so that's cheaper than Skype. I also have an entirely free 05 number with them.

Sipgate will (or, rather, would .....) give a free geographical number, but not allow Porting in to Residential accounts.

Other VOIP providers charge from £1 (ex VAT) upwards.

Free geographical numbers are now virtually a thing of the past owing to Ofcom rules designed to use restricted number sets efficiently. Sensible, methinks.

I've been using the VOIP service for a month now, and not had any issues whatsoever. It is clear, loud and very inexpensive.

Well happy :)
