1D at 28 E?

28.2, 28.5, 19.2, 23.5 E

Now we know the new position of 1C in the recent ses satellite shuffle (replacing 1H as it seems) what is ses up to with 1D stationaiy at 28 E for some days now? Just taking a breath or will it stay until 1N arrives or even longer? Any ideas/knowledge?

thanks, just don't like to "flood" forum with posts just to edit mistakes. Maybe edit should be one of the scant privileges?

The problem is that scammers are wise to that. They can edit an innocuous post fill it full of rubbish if edit privileges are granted straight away.

What they don't have is patience to make some valid posts (no "me too" ones) and wait a few weeks!
 
yep ... sadly understandable ... a few ruining the net (and more) for anyone else. But yes, one can wait a few posts if that prevents spammers and flamers.

Apart from that: Any news about 1D? Is it still at 28 E? Transmitting anything? Are the beacon frequencies active?
 
Whilst not foolproof where broadcast satellites that have been moving around, the n2yo tracking site says 1D is at 28.03E

SES wont give me a straight answer but best guess - 1D is there to provide additional feed capacity for the Olympics. One thing is absolutely certain - shes not there for general broadcast purposed - shes way too inclined for that.

This is the official word from SES:

As ASTRA 1D is in inclined orbit we can no longer use it for broadcasting services. We thus use the satellite for several purposes including point-to-point transmissions and short term occasional use services

so no real gain for us? Or could it free some feed txps on either astra or eurobird?
 
Depends what your interest is - the feed hunters will be thrilled to have access to a new feed slot.
 
What does "inclined orbit" mean?
 
When a satellite nears the end of its commercial broadcast life it runs low on station keeping fuel.

To eke out the fuel reserves the north - south station keeping is stopped, and gravitational influences make it start to wobble up and down off the main orbital arc. The satellite describes an elongated figure of 8 with the middle of the 8 on the arc plane.

The satellite crosses the middle of the 8 twice a day in every 24 hours - once going north, and once south.

Once the wobble passes about 1 degree north & south the bird becomes useless for day to day commercial service as it starts getting out of the reception acceptance angles of the dishes. At this point shes finished as a commercial bird, but as long as theres enough fuel on board to safely send her to graveyard orbit then the elderly bird can be used for short duration point - point services (basically feeds).

Running an old satellite inclined means the owner can make a few extra bucks from an expensive resource. As the asset will certainly be fully depreciated by then any income is pure profit,.

Theres no definitive answer to how far a bird can be allowed to run inclined - it depends on the capabilities of the tracking station(s)

One interesting case in point is AMC 14 launched in 2008 & currently slotted at 34.5E.

14 was supposed to go to 61W to operate DISH USA services. However the Russkies botched the launch and she ended up in the wrong orbit. By using the onboard thrusters AMC14 was eventually manoeuvred into a geostationary orbit at 34.5E. As far as I know theres been no definite answer as to who is using the bird, but shes over 13 degrees inclined, so the most likely answer is the American war machine for mil comms in Iraq, Afghanistan and whatever other theatres of war the Yanks have got themselves tangled up in during recent years.

or for non tekkies the satellite no longer stays on one relative fixed point to point your dish to - only once or twice a day it moves through that point. So these satellites can only be received with systems that "follow" the sat in the skies ... if I got that right ....

15º is the maximum inclination a geostationary satellite will get to. After that it starts to recover.

Thanks for the replies. Based on what you have said it seems a bit bizarre they would position ASTRA 1D at 28.03ºE to be used for feeds for the Olympics (or whatever) when that is the main direct to home orbital position for the UK and ROI. Wouldn't it be less risky to use an "empty" orbital position?
 
Remember 1D is 100's of km along the arc from the other Astra birds. And it also depends on if SES have any other slots available, and what the frequency coordinations are with those slots.

Its possible that SES have had to move 1D from 2E as its frequency coverage overlaps with Eutelsats newly leased Chinasat 5C at 1.6E.
 
Is there a possibility that 1D could be interfering with 2D ? Maybe thats another reason why our BBC is playing up here ?
 
I rather doubt 1D is on air yet. Maybe someone could do a blindscan and see if they can find any low band feeds
