2.4 metre Dish. Is it worth it

Having dabbled in satellites for a short while now. I installed an 80cm dish with disecq motor along with a tm6900 super. Dabbled with the diablo cam and watched alot of the channels disappear. It has got me thinking is it time to move on and see what else is achievable. The 2.4m dish looked quite appealing. Im aware of the planning laws and have obtained all the relevant forms from my council, just waiting to get scaled planned drawings done and there off to council. I have a nice spot at the end of my garden where the dish would be positioned and not seen by anyone but myself(no nosey neighbours). The 2 foot hole has been dug ready for the polar mount. Im getting a large reel of four core cable, a 36v motor, a v-box and of course the dish.
My first question is what will i be able to acheive( oh and im based near Maidstone Kent) I know nilesat should be attainable so showtime with a gamma could be possible. What else im thinking, how far east and how far west. Amazonas 61w is possible, if it is what will i get, lots of encrypted channels in latin American.
Has anyone else gone down this route and never looked back? what are they achieving? Will it get dish network on 61.5w, looks quite good on lyngsat, and yes a valid subscription would be required, but is it possible. Its really weighing up the potential cost and what will i get in return or should i just think s.d it and fill Mr Murdochs pockets and get the full HD package.

So hoping all you 2.4ers can convince me and all us 80ers are just dreamers. :-rofl2

Forget 61W - theres only 1 European beam payload active and thats a data channel.

You wont get the American stuff with a 2.4m dish

Facts is what i need, so thankyou. Any ideas what it will achieve?:-worship
 
maybe you should take a look at all of the footprints on lyngsat.

There you can work out if the 2.4 m dish is what you would require.

You may find that a 1.8m or 1.5 m dish is optimal accross the clarke belt, and anything over that is just wasted
 
Why wasted? :)

For example, 1.5m gives me wide beam of 1M and occasionally - some 1H transponders.

Going to 2.4m instantly enables complete 1H and part of 1KR and 1L.

A piece of interest was in 76.5E and 78E, in 2008, since there were some good channels in VIA1 encoded... Now they are VIA 2.6...
 
if your after showtime for the football have you spoken to a local satellite shop which would have an idea of dish size for 7west as 1.8m could be enough ?

as 2.4m might be overkill unless your after feeds and all that.

with 2.4m dish you would get loads of channels but most are encrypted.

also the spot you say is ideal for the dish does it have perfect line of site for at least swing of 45east to 45west ?

also what dish are you looking to buy, hope not that 2.4m from maplin as they are not good quality and would be a waste.

Well, you have the land, you (don't) have fussy neighbours, and you are looking to receive more than you already are.

A larger dish is therefore the logical solution, just how large depends purely on your budget.

As Wod says though, you need to buy carefully as some dishes out there are just not worth the money.

NIlesat will be very easy on that sized dish. I would have thought- all transponders in all weather more or less.

Just down the road from you in Gravesend I had all transponders on a 1.8m, with snow falling.

Of course, it woud need to be a decent one though, otherwise the size is a waste.
