A recent survey, conducted by the Frank N Magid Associates research firm during the Disney D23 Expo in Anaheim, revealed that a majority of American consumers agree that their television viewing is improved by 3DTV.
More than 500 visitors were interviewed at last August's Expo. The team found that 27% of those surveyed believed 3DTV was “fabulous,” 34% believe it “brings things alive in a way I've never seen before,” 50% wished they had the technology in their home, 71% said that 3DTV is “dramatically better” or “much better,” when compared to '2D' and 99% believe that it is “somewhat better” than HDTV or '2D.'
Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors said: “These are very positive and impressive responses. When it comes to 3DTV, consumers clearly like what they see. Their feelings are very reminiscent of the public's response to HDTV in its early days.”
More than just being similar to HDTV's early days, 3DTV seems to be off to a much better beginning that HD. It took four years after HDTV was introduced before the public saw channels from major content carriers. In the case of 3D, multiple full-time channels were available on cable and satellite just a year after launching. Some of these channels include Comcast's Xfinity 3D, Discovery’s 3Net, ESPN 3D, and DirecTV's n3D Powered by Panasonic.
“We've always said that, just as with HDTV, once consumers experience 3DTV, they will want it. This survey proves it,” said Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, North America's Chief Technology Officer for the Panasonic Corporation, which funded the survey. “We couldn't be happier with the results.”
“We're very pleased with the rapid-fire development of 3DTV,” he continued. “Panasonic has just completed the second year of its sponsorship of CBS Sports' expanded 3D broadcasts of the US Open Tennis Championships, a production which garnered an Emmy Award in its first year, and we are now looking forward to next year's 3D production of the London Olympic Games. With these and many other exciting 3D events and movies ready to amaze and entertain, consumers have every reason to step up to the glorious viewing experience of Full HD 3D television.”
Apart from gearing up for the Olympics, Panasonic has also revealed that they are focused on Active Shutter 3D technology.
