The idea is to generate lots of media coverage by, if at all possible, avoiding calling any 0870 numbers on that particular day.

I was going to mention the One Tel lower-cost prefix service for 0870 numbers, but it seems that's disappeared ......

Otherwise, yes, it certainly is a scam! For many customer helplines, you have to call these high cost "non geographic" numbers, and are then (delibrately?) kept waiting in a queue!

Admittedly, I stuck my work's non-0870 number in the list, BUT I have to say, I try to keep the customer's call as short as possible so they don't hammer on at me for the cost of the call, especially for the older customers....

090 numbers though, they're the worst offenders I think, even though I am occasionally on the other end of one taking my time....
