Hi. Can anyone please explain the 5.1 on films Sky are putting out. I have a 5.1 system for my DVD Player. But i dontb know to get it working through the Sky plus reciever. Do i have to use a toslink cable as its on the back of the Sky plus box. Trouble is i have no such connection on my 5.1 decoder on my DVD Player. Is there another way of doing it or am i looking at a better 5.1 system..

TOSLink and change the settings (SKY+ SETUP IIRC) will reveal that quite a lot of Sky Movies are DD.

Without TOS cable.....2 channels is the best you'll get.
You can get TOS -> Digital Coax cables too, I believe, if you have a digital-in that's coax on what I assume is an all-in-one DVD/surround system

Thanka Leee. Looks as if my Cyberhome DVD 5.1 does'nt have a Toslink socket...Bummer. Oh well. May be buy a decent 5.1 next time.

On the subject, what SKY content is currently 5.1 encloded?

Only movies? or are are other programs being broadcast in this format?

[some] Sky Movies and some Disney Channel stuff right now AFAIK :)
 
[ Get a new amp with Digital in and out, I have a Pioneer digital signal processor with 4 Digital in and 2 out for coax and optical. bought it about 3 years ago for €200 and its the best bargain I ever bought new. Its decodes any signal in and sends it out as 5.1. Loads of functions on it , try investing in one.

You've got me thinking now......I already have a 5.1 Cyberhome system. But without Optical outlet. So could i just replace my Sub woof which incorporates the amp for another amp. And just plug in my existing speaks as i have floored over the cables. Besides they do sound very good.

Any idea's on this option and where i could buy a nice cheap Amp with 5.1 and Optical output...Or am i asking too much...

Update....I have just found this...What ya rekkun. Could it be the answer..Trouble is i still need a woofer dont i.

Which cyberhome system do you have? What connections are on the back? You might be able to add a decoder to the setup.

Certainly, if you replace the thing, you should be able to reuse the speakers. The sub may be also something you can use again - I'd assume it's active/requires power supply?

Sorry Leee. I said it was Cyberhome..Its a Videolgic 5.1 that can be used on pc's. My DVD player is Cyberhome...I am a dip at times...Sorry again. And yes requires power supply.

Thats where I got mine in Dublin, since closed down now and cant get any more bargains. You will definitely get the one you want there.

If I was you I would get a Dolby Digital amp with Coaxal in & Optical in for say your S*y box and your DVD player you only need optical & Coaxal out on the amp if you are going to record audio in digital format. You have to make sure you have Digital out on your S*y box & DVD player so it matches up with the amp. So Most DVD players come with OP & coax out. The amp picks up the digital sound and distributes it to all the speakers you can adjust it yourself as well. If the sound is in analogue it still does a very good job on it too. sometimes i have football matches on when only analogue is used and its still fab.Its no good getting amp with the wrong Digital ins. If your sub has no connection for the amp you could always pick up a cheap one. I always buy separates so you can mix and match. Hope this helps, John

Thanks for that John....I have just found an Optical out connection on the back of my DVD player...Would it work if i connect it to my Sky plus box...Usually my dvd player just overrides everything else and gives me the DVD screen...Just a thought.

Optical Out does exactly that I'm afraid. You're looking at an amp or some other device for this......
