66°E transponder

I wonder if one of our continental friends could check something for me, I've been scanning 66°E and can lock a few signals including Aktua, MIR and HeliosNet on 11517H but just up from that is another signal on 11578H, none of my usual lists have anything near that frequency and it appears to be just too weak to lock, can someone satisfy my curiousity please?

11572H is a valid transponder frequency on these birds, but move further west to make sure you are not collecting stuff off the 62 East satellite beam. (SR 3333)

Slightly less likely is something from 68.5 East at 11584H which is also active.

Being in the middle of the Mediterranean I wouldn't call myself exactly "continental" , but nevertheless here's what I have. 11577,H,3500 reported by crazyscan as a DVB-S2/QPSK ACM/VCM modulation with relatively low signal (7dB snr). Nothing important to see there, just data...

Thanks chaps, it's very frustrating to see something close to lock threshhold but not quite make it as I know the answer is a larger dish but that is out of the question. A 1.2 on a diseqc motor would last about a month up here and a polar mount would have my so far patient neighbour up in arms.

Not sure if conditions are favourable today although the hot and very hazy air doesn't seem ideal for DX reception but I'm getting exceptionally good reception on 66E at the moment. Been able to get stable pictures from 12658H for the first time which includes MIR Service, a screenshot of a spectrum analyser? Also got the data transponder on 11671V on the European beam.

Yes I suspect you are correct about the DXing conditions ..
Both Aktau and Mir ...unstable ...and locking in short bursts..
Had to go to the F15 but did manage to scan in Mir3 and Mir Service ...
But never managed Mir before on the TD88 ...

Wish I had a bigger dish on there now..

..Got a photo of the channel ...but only lasted MIR moments ...then it was gone..

I've found another signal this morning, one that isn't listed either! 12738H 825 5/6 DVB-S2 8PSK, is in theory below the SR capability of the 7301 and DVB Dream fails to lock it but Crazyscan shows it and TSReader reports

I'll test with the F15 ...but suspect its also unlockable on that stb ..
..and sadly its the only truely high gain receiver I have ..
The TBS is an option ..but not quite as high gain as the F15 ...and I struggle with the F15 on this bird ..
Oh for a bigger dish to see this part of the arc..

Thanks VS, I thought it was a ghost signal to begin with when Dream wouldn't find it, glad I thought to try Crazyscan on it! I know what you mean about bigger dishes, been watching all the borderline locking constellation images thinking the same thing, I'm seriously considering trying a 1.2 Gibertini on the motor. This 12658 transponder is strange, MIR service seems to be feed between a news studio and reporters but has a lot of gallery noise on it.

Sadly I can't ..
I can't even reach 68 East ...
..and 66East is so low on the horizon at my QTH ...that its very intermittent at best..

Yeah 75e would be below horizon for you but I know he could get 75e in Brighton a few years ago on a clear morning.

Not from here as my easterly horizon is up around 2°. 75E was received using my 1.2 PF when it was installed at Saltdean further along the coast but it was 300ft ASL looking out to sea so the horizon is below 0°. According to a late night reccy with inclinometer and laser pointer 68.5 should be do-able here when the bush down the road sheds its leaves lol

VS, I've also been watching that this afternoon and it's relaying 1TV Russia, just seen the strangest act on a 'talent' show with some guy being creative with shaving foam rofl What's more interesting are that all these 66E signals are still here. I assumed the sudden increase in signal strength was due to refraction in the troposphere as we've had a few days of really good tropo enhanced VHF/UHF signals but now things have returned to normal 66E signals are still at their elevated levels.

Down here in Malta we are lucky cause we can span from 45W right up to 75E with almost a 1m though for some channels a 1.2 is a must.

Have attached a photo shot of 75E with a 1.2m Dish on a Moteck Motor, though a 1m would have been fine for half of the channels on this Sat.

Nice. 75E is 15 degree elevation in Malta, so much easier than here. About as easy as 53E, which isn't always possible anyway...

Any chance of 85E where you are?

Nope, my motor doesn't go that far but I never tried on a fixed Dish.

Another evening of VHF/UHF tropo and again I bag a marginal signal, shame I don't have room for some 10GHz ham equipment on the mast, it would be interesting to compare results between terrestrial and satellite during these inversions. Just about locked this one up last night, unfortunately both video services are BISS encoded so no pictures just the properties page.
