I suggest you check n2yo.com for the actual elevation at any particular time.

Well from here using the above site, EL is showing +33.48° at this time (19:20) :)

are you looking at the elevation 33.02 think it should be the declination as this keeps altering its at 4.43 at the minute

Just use the elevation data - ignore the declination shown on the n2yo.com. Also make sure you use you own location co-ordinates. The site works out your location form your IP address but this can be wrong.

well finally fitted another actuator similar to nelsons and have posted a pic as promised, and yes it does work..couple of small niggles
1 i used a second hand jack and it has about 10mm of play, can this be removed
2 whats the best way to slow the actuator down its pretty quick, would it be possible to reduce the 36v to say 15v or 24v with say a voltage reg (not sure what current the arm takes)any comments appreciated thanks

hi
just about to pack up for the night and saw your post -- you,v been busy --
it looks a solid job -- nice one --

you can get rid of the play by fitting a new worm gear bearing -- not bad to do --
remove the shaft where it bolts to the motor part -- (1 large bolt )
and just take the shaft apart -- think there is a recent post by someone on here - with pictures ?

yes less voltage will slow it up nicely -- i,v used a 12 volt car battery when testing -- in my workshop

cheers nelson.b .

Nice work.

Assume your using a vbox to move it? In which case take a look at this thread regarding reducing the voltage/speed > http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/...ed-systems/48137-inside-picture-v-box-ii.html

would this cause a 10-15mm play on the jack though, cheers iwol

10 - 15 mm is rather a lot --
the coarse thread in the shaft could be worn -and the piece that it screws through -- any i,v had in pieces though - the bearing was the main cause --of play -- mayb,e its a combination af all three parts being worn --
if the seal has gone and its been getting water in for some time -- it will be a rusty mess inside the shaft --l.o.l. --
i,v repaired quite a few -- because the bearings cost very little - and its an easy and satisfying job to do --
that said -- i did buy a new one to fit on the incline mod - for the 1.8 dish

cheers nelson.b.

thanks nelson ive also found that the reed sensor is u/s as well, ive been sold a real dud..ah well win some loose some, where do you get the bearings from please nelson

hi -- any engineering type company will supply bearings -- i think --
you need the bearing number or the old one to be measured

i,m lucky that my local solid fuel and gas supplier -- is also a builders merchant - and - sells road springs and bearings - and other light engineering bits an pieces --

for your entertainment i,m posting a pic of one i took out of an 18 inch actuator that i used to have on the 1.8 dish , before i upgraded to a 24.in -- this had a lot of play in it --

as you can see it was all but gone -- the roller cage has collapsed -- and some balls have dropped out -- a windy night would have finished it -- :-ohcrap

thanks nelson how did you get to this bearing once you had the shaft off plz

hi -- some pics to show --
the whole assembly unscrews out of the casing -- think i had to hold it gently in a vice -- insert short rods into the holes and tap at the base of them with an old screwdriver and hammer -- first time as it was a bit rusted in -- w.d. 40 helps
normal thread anti clockwise to undo --

cheers nelson.b.

spot on nelson fitted new bearing and reed switch ,now like a new arm no play whatsoever, ready for testing on 8w tomorrow, hopefully

nice one --

have you found a satisfactory way to reduce the voltage of the V box output --to slow it down enough for you ?

cheers nelson.b.

no not looked really because now its seeing the sensor it only moves two counts on the vbox, whereas before when it didnt see the sensor it moved a lot further then stopped when it didnt have any feedback, will persue this when i get more time but for now seems ok,just gonna test on 8w when feeds appear this afternoon time permitting
