Hi

im new to this and currently have sky hd installed, my contract is up in the new year and im then looking to install a motorised setup

My main questions are though, as my house isnt south facing and the south facing wall is blocked by another how as is the north, how would i go about mounting my dish ? a house a few streets up has one in there back garden on a stand of some sort ? how big would the dish need to be to recieve a load of channe bare in mind im in south yorkshire on top of a hill if that makes any difference ?

What channels am i likely to recieve? how do i recieve football ? movies ? music channels ?

I've read the guides and various threads and cant seem to find any info relating to my problems

Also does anyone recommend any sites/stores to buy all the equipment from ?

I also have with my sky package a multiroom subscription to 2 other rooms both being bedrooms, am i still able to do this with the motorised setup ? can i watch different channels in all 3 rooms ?


How do i go about recieving hd channels ? i assume this is down to the reciever ?
 
Hi,

You need to find a place tthat will give you a view due south, with an elevation of approx 30 degrees due south and down to approx 15 to 20 degrees 45 degrees ish either side, or as much as you can of it.

One way to mount in the ground is to concret a pole in, or you can fix to an out house. Also you can mount on a pole that sticks aboove the gutter, and put the dish on that.

With a motorised dish, most normally go with an 80cm to 1m job.
 
'Sky' and 'anything else in the world', do not mix, so go for the motorised as a separate entity.


Additionally dish size is proportional to channel availabilty on a motorised system, so get the biggest one you can easily afford, and make sure whoever you get to install it, gives a guarantee in writing.

So if i buy a dish around 120cm i should beable to recieve a large amount of channels ?

What sort of recievers will i need to view hd channels ? do i split the lnb like sky do or isit a different way with a satelite system ?

If you are planning to keep on using the Sky receiver in any capacity whatsoever then leave the sky dish up. Digiboxes really dont react well to not having a permanent feed to them.

Remember even when you cancel the contract you will still get all the free channels on the Sky box.
 
Well, it depends on which 45 degree angle the dish is pointing to.

Looking at the wall, if it points to the right, then that position should be good, you wall points roughly south.

The sky dish is pointing at 28E.
 
Im quite new to satellites but now have a few dishes and an ever growing satellite farm.

What I know I have learnt myself from when I had a 2m dish about 16 yrs ago and now have gained knowledge from this fine forum regarding digital.

One thing struck me though which you mentioned and someone replied but Im not too sure if the message got through.

If you want football, movies and music then KEEP your sky account.

The range of channels you will get on your motorized set up is simply amazing from all cultures from all corners of the globe, but I detected you still want and need things like football.

My advice is stay with Sky if you still want English Premier League and some kind of current movie package.

The Dubai football league is intriguing, German, French, Italian and Belgian TV are all great as are the news feeds you can catch, but if you are thinking this will be a substitute to watching the latest Jim Carrey film or Man U v Wigan like you are now then I feel you may be disappointed.

There are alternatives but you still need you sky box and card.

Regarding the other questions - take a day off work and drive to a specialist satellite shop - there is linuxsat in Huddersfield near you or seek an appointment with satellitesuperstore for example.

The people on these forums are great but equally there is no substitute for seeing something for yourself.
