If I keep turning the volume up, I can hear just above 13kHz in both ears.

Don't forget that it could be the speakers/headphones that might not be reproducing signal output above a certain frequency, your ears may be better than you are led to believe from the results. Also try swopping the headphones or sit the other way round in the room to eliminate potential wave cancelling effects.

And don't wear anything furry over the ears

OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

A Nice site, I found out that the constant ringing in my ears is at 3.456 KHz, found it by nulling it out. (where the ringing stopped)

And my ears cut out at around 9.5 KHz on the left side and around 8.25 KHz on the left

Tested with Sennheiser headphones, and a soundbaster 5.1 audio card and mixer.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

A lot of the modern "conversion" turntables on offer today tend to come with cheap cartridges, so, you lose out on the full experience of vinyl (never mind the digital compression!), so my advice, use a proper turntable with a proper cartridge, with a pre-amp (or stereo amp) connected to the Line-Input of a computer soundcard, that's how I've done some of my conversions... :)

Oh, and [Smug mode] 17KHz, through laptop speakers, few "odd spots" here and there but got up there nicely... :D [/Smug mode]

So ...the Amos deck arrived this morning ..
Just tried Side 1 of Stackridge ..(1971 pressing)
Not tried playback as yet but then I'm not familliar with Audacity ..
I think I recorded the wav for side 1 of the album ..
looks to be about 25gb ..for approx 25 minutes ...so roughly 1gb per minute at 96000
Does this look about right size wise ?
I think I detected a bit of 'wow' during the recording ..so maybe _not_ a hi fi quality turntable ? (expected)
Time will tell if it is up to the job..
What I will say is that considering I haven't played this album for over 20 years ..
'tis' in good nick
;)

I too considered this Chris ...but I wanted as near lossless as possible with minimal compression..
and direct conversion rather than through a 'middle man' /CD
And not in track form ...just Side A Side B ....as though flipping the album ..
So the internal ADC would be relevant for flac I think..

Missed this post, FLAC is lossless, as per the acronym. With regards to minimal compression though, recording to .wav standard gives you everything your heart desires (except Rachel in a thong).

WAVs are a proprietary Microsoft format IIRC. They are less universally playable on different devices than MP3s. The upside is that they take up less space than MP3s for a given symbol rate - about half IIRC again.

Not tried it on a decent amp as yet ...but on the little lappy soundbar speakers ..sounds very good indeed ..
:D
looks like this project is going in the right direction..
now approx 150mb for 25 minutes

If you do find any annoying clicks & pops from scratches on the lp's you can edit them out using audacity. Its been a while since I played with the programme but its a very powerful tool once you get under the bonnet.

May well have a root in the loft to see if I can find a half decent turntable I can mod...
maybe rip the guts out of the poxy one and install the ADC and preamp in it ..as I suspect any issues remaining are mechanical and down to the poor quality lightweight deck.
I'm impressed by the audio quality of the rip ..considering I'm not using a soundcard ..but the whole thing is let down by the slight speed variation of the spinning disc.

..there IS another possibility of course ..
This poxy unit draws its power through the usb port ..which may not be adequately supplying the needed 5v at a constant current ..
I have a spare 5v 1 amp switch mode doing nowt ..so I may well fit this inside the deck plinth..just to see if it helps..

Don't need any mods, just a pre-amp of somesort and an RCA to 3.5mm cable to connect to the Line-in on the computer... :)

Agreed ..but there is no line in on the lappy ..only mic in ..
So I'm trying to avoid tying up a PC ..by making it all independent of a sound card ..
I'm happy enough with the usb linked ADC ..
just need to sort out the turntable.

Couldnt you just attach something "heavy" to the underside of the turntable platter to give it a bit more inertia? Suitably balanced of course so it doesnt cause undue wear to the mechanicals..

Agreed ..but there is no line in on the lappy ..only mic in ..

You can actually connect line-level inputs to a lot of mic inputs, particularly on laptops that lack a line-in, the onboard sound detects that it's not a microphone and turns off the plug-in power... :)

MP3 is a lossy format and - more often than not - compressed , which Evan is doing his best to avoid

I could post images of Rachel in a thong at this point, but though it might stall progress.
