On a more serious note: I've always wondered what you do if you get out of synch on the big bells - I mean you can't just "stop" the bell for half a swing to get back in the cadence, can you?
 
If you can't control a big Bell with precision, we don't let folk loose on them!

My uncle was a campanologist in a local village suburb of Oxford. The ringers used to organise coach trips to guest ring at churches throughout Southern England. I went on many of these as a kid in the fifties and very early sixties and whilst they were ringing I would explore and photograph (with my box Brownie) the churches and churchyards. The most unusual church I saw was a Norman wooden church bell tower somewhere in Kent IIRC.

On a somewhat more sombre note, after last night's hobby Ringing, we fitted muffles to the clappers of our Bells and very soon I shall be heading into town to Ring the "half-muffled" Bells in association with the Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade.

By applying softening material to only one side of the clapper, the result is that the Bells sound alternately loud then subdued.

I'm sure friends here have heard the like .... but, if not, no doubt St. Paul's Cathedral and others will be captured in Sound (and possibly Vision) by the News Media today.
