During the Belgium F1 race I built a new 12 segment coax colinear. Its only hung out of the bedroom window through the honeysuckle but its already added over 30 miles to my range out to the southeast and a bit less out the the north east on the highest flight levels

I might now be in range of stuff approaching Newcastle as well as Edinburgh. We shall see.

The new 12 segment antenna has pushed my maximum range out to 75 miles out to the north east :) - Still just lashed up down the front wall although Ive managed to get it a couple of feet or so higher as well

Now do I go for a 16 or get an amp? Theres plenty of traffic being picked up but no positive plots on on the VRS

I shall get a system running on my little laptop then go mobile up to some high ground :D

Think it'll be the 16 element somehow - my range has shot up north east & south east with the 12 element :)

Range circles at 20 miles this time :)

As a side question,

I live right inline with the Augusta Westlands, runway, and on the heading for R.n.a.s. Yeovilton's runways.

This morning there have been at least 8 helicopters ranging in size.

They have been hovering around, and coming in to land and take off.

So while I was outside I loaded the flight radar app, and it gives me the civilians aircraft, no sign of military.

So if they are not on the app, are they not giving out the radar signal or is it a case of nobody logging them?

Certainly Helicopters would normally show up ...even Gliders do ...
..but I dont think military craft have to broadcast a signal from an active transponder at all times like civilian craft do ..
I think I read somewhere that the situation might have to change soon ...but dont quote me on that..

Ive seen several mil birds up here - a couple of RAF Hercy's and a Yankee KC10 tanker.

One of the Hercy's uses the ZORRO1 callsign :D Never seen any positional info for the Hercy's but they pop up on the aircraft tracking info screen

Ive just spotted a Tornado pop up briefly on the aircraft info screen :D

As usual with the mil craft no plot on the screen and no screengrab as it disappeared too quick for me to organise myself!

Ive had absolutely no success whatsoever trying to feed to FR24 - Ive followed the instructions to the letter and the scripts install onto the RPi but nothing happens.

But Ive found this site instead , so I shall have a go with this one - a much smaller site run by hobbyists for hobbyists.

The usb ports on the pi3 have stopped responding. This seems to be quite a common problem and the best fix for it seems to be "leave it switched off for a while"(!)

So Ive set my little win7 netbook up running dump1090 instead. It seems to be working - although as there is bu99er all in range atm I cant see anything to confirm its working correctly! So I wait for something to come into range.

Now I know how a spider feels waiting for a juicy fly to arrive :D

My juicy fly was a FinnAir from Dublin heading towards Helsinki. Now I know its working I can start tinkering again :D

It has to be said getting the dump1090 running on a win7 netbook is a LOT easier than getting it going on a pi3!

Have you got the files downloaded Chris?

If so unzip them & Copy them into a folder on the main drive of your computer. You will end up with lots of various bmp files

Then open the VRS main programme & select the top option - data sources. Point the various options at the correct folder:

chris.JPG

Its personal preference as to which logos you use - one set has the tail fin logos as well as the main logo although I reckon that small bmp looks a bit fussy.

Wait for a new plane to come over & with a bit of luck you should have logos :)

If you have probs post back & we will sort it between us.

It doesnt really matter what folder route you use - when I was first setting up one post recommended using the base folder "kinetic" so I did & made various sub folders in there.
