Advice needed regarding Satellite "reflecting"

Hello Guys,

I stumbled across this forum looking for some tips and advice on installing a satellite for my home, compliments on the forum.

I am looking for some advice, or even to be pointed in the correct direction.

My situation is the following:

Basically, I am looking at getting Sky Italia (So I can watch Italian football) for my house, I already actually have the official box and subscription which i purchased in Italy.

Problem being that I cannot actually get a satellite signal due to there being a 400 year old tree (which is listed - other wise i would saw it down myself!) blocking the view… )(-red

What I would like to know is that if there was any possibility of deflecting the Sky signal of another Satellite?

My bro-in law lives very close to my house, almost on the same street, and from my house you can get a clear view of his Satellite (he also has Sky Italia). Would it be possible to re-direct a signal from his satellite on to one on my roof which in turn would allow me to receive the signal for Sky Italia?

Do you know if anything like this is feasible?

If so, can you point me in the right direction of equipment etc?

I hope i've explained it as best as i can. I am sure someone here must know of a solution.

Many thanks in advance for taking your time to read my post, or even be able to post a reply.

Marco

Technically that is possible. I have seen such deflectors, but for lower frequencies (up to 5ghz). I don't know, does such systems exist for ku band frequencies.

I think it is possible to deflect the beam, pretty sure it was mentioned a while back, but it was from a large block, so a flat plate metal plate at the right angle might work.

I think it was channel hopper that posted it.

Cheers Guys,

Good to see that it is possible.

Btw, i'm not technical with satellites in any way whatsoever , so when frequencies are mentioned i cant follow, excuse my ignorance.

Also, just to confirm the distance from the other "reflector" would be less than 100 metres.

Again, thanks for your replies!

Hopefully i can finally get my Sky Italia !

Its very unlikely you could get it to work.

Can you put the dish at the bottom of the garden to get around the tree??

Absolutely no chance, trust me.

I've tried all measures, had various satellite installers on site aswell, there is not way that i can get a signal from anywhere on my land.

Remember, this is one heck of a tree! It is twice the height of my house....

Why is it unlikely to work?

Would there be any way to run a fibre optic cable between your house and his?

Unless the mid reflector is focussed toward your dish, and is has an ideal reflecting surface, you would lose too much signal. I've seen it done on some microwave shots, and even then the mid reflector was specially manufactured.

How about you get your bro-in-law to have a dual lnb put on his dish and have your Sky box at his house, then access your Sky box via a Slingbox?

Well if you cant get the dish into a suitable place where are you going to put a huge ugly reflector (eg sheet of metal) a couple of meters square??

I purchased a Slingbox last year and was extremely dissapointed in the quality for the end user...

Many things have improved in the last year... But i doubt it very much.

Ananaloguesat, like i mentioned earlier, i am not technical in anyway whatsoever , i didn't realise that what i would be looking at is a large sheet of metal ....

I thought it would of been a simple solution of pointing my satellite at his in a certain manner enabling me to get the feed...

Again, i'm not very good with these things...

The dish has been designed specifically not to do that. It receives from a narrow angle (a couple of degrees or so), and focusses what it receives into the LNB. A flat plat on the other hand would receive from all directions, and bounce the signals off, like the cushion of a pool table does the ball.

There's local company, using DVB-S for terrestrial signal transmission. I know form where they broadcast, and If I align bare LNB to that tower, I can get strong signal.

Once, I was playing with my 1.5m primefocus dish, trying to get something lower than 105.5E. For my surprise, I've got reflected signal of that terrestrial DVB-S, and according to anlge and direction, it was reflected from generic flat panel 16 stage building!

Why not use a high power AV sender instead of a Slingbox?

How would this work? Could you post me a link to such a device?

Thanks

How it would work is like this:
Your Brother in Law would put a dual LNB on his dish, one coax cable would go to his current set up, the other would go to your receiver in his house (I would suggest upstairs in a room facing your house). The AV sender connects to the scart socket on your receiver, which then transmits to the AV receiver in your house (the AV sender and receiver should be part of a kit). The AV receiver connects to your TV allowing you to view the signal from your receiver (in his house) on your TV.
You might have to fiddle with it to get a good reception.
I would suggest googling "high power AV sender" and see what you come up with.
Just don't tell your neighbours, otherwise they might buy AV receivers to watch your programs!
You might (in theory) have to check with your local laws to see what power AV sender you are allowed (if any).

hi to all,
i agree with low profile on the av sender.
basiclly your sky italia box would be set up at his house and the av sender would send the audio and vedio to your house.
how many meters is the house?
your av sender sill send the remote control information as well
so the sky box will be at his house and the remote and receiver will be at your house.
with wooden housed most of these should be for 3 to 4 km.
they run on 5 ghz freq so they will not interfear with anything else.

you point the remote to your home unit and it sends the remote signal to the transmitter unit at his house.
if he as sky italia at his house you will need a dual lnb to run the system.
if the tree is so big that you can not get a clear shot is would be the best way

:)
