Advise for Newbie.

My Satellite Setup
Technomate 3150 and 5200D with standard 60cm dish and Sky quad LNB.
My Location
Dublin, Ireland
Hi All,
New to this forum, but do use other forums and find them a great source of info, so I am sure this will be the same.
Based in Ireland but apparently both Free view and Free sat available. Want to change as fed up with bills. 'O'-red
Which is best and in simple lingo, what is difference?
Also, what is a good inexpensive receiver/set up that would do most of what I want:
1. Watch TV,
2. Watch different channels in a second room.
3. I suppose it would be silly not to have HD as this is the way things are going, perhaps in just one room for present.
4. Be able to record.

and anything else that might be useful.

As I said, in simple english, not foreign, but new to this area.

Nice and straight forward, get yourself a freesat HD PVR and a standalone freesat receiver for another room. Can be feed from a single dish using a quad LNb.
 
Presumably you are talking Irish Freeview rather than the British version. The main Irish channels are subscription only (via Sky) on satellite so NOT available on freesat. Your best bet for the most out of free TV would be one box for each.

Dave first, local station are available frre, but only via aerial for local or part of SKY, NTL package. Also UTV is the same, but not a problem to install an aerial.
Dave (Satelliteman), what make receivers would you suggest and roughly, what cost?
Could you reccommend a diy KIT including dish?
What IS difference between Freeview and freesat?

They're both digital TV but Freeview is by ordinary TV aerial and Freesat is by satellite.

Note that Freesat is not quite the same as FTV (free to view) satellite TV as Freesat has a special programme guide that gives you information for 7 days. FTV is limited to now and next information.

Read a mag about freesat/freeview, why do some receivers have a card slot, and should I look for one withe a slot?
As I said, a total newbie.

Satellite receivers with card slots normally have embedded conditional access for pay TV. 'Freesat' receivers are just that, reception of fta (free to air) programming with the added advantage of a dedicated EPG.

As there seems to be small difference in both, which would you reccommend, or is only difference programme guide? Are channels received the same?

For ease of use, I would go with a Freesat system. The fact that you have a decent EPG means that its very easy to schedule recordings.

If you go down the FTA (Sat) receiver route, you'll only have now and next EPG as mentioned above.

I know little about UK terrestrial free view, so cant really comment. Can you pick up digital UK terrestrial signals in Dublin?
