My name is James from Swansea.

Thought id sign up as im currently studing City and Gulds 2218 (Satellite and Aerial Installation)
starting today at swansea college and finished by xmas :)

Any advice before i kick it all off? .. apart from "dont do it" :P

Done the C&G 2218 myself, good to have under your belt.
 
No advice, I'm just a hobbyist, but a welcome to the forum.

There are quite a few Pros here (!!!) who might give better observations.

Hi mate and thanks for the reply. Are you employed now with regards to this qualification? I just need to find out some tips as of where to go once completed :)

Is this a full time course, or do you have a daytime job that runs concurrently ?

I currently work for Virgin Media as a tech support (on the phones for TV faults) and the course will be in the night for 2 hours once a week.

I'd suggest a cheap but decent workmens waterproof coat. The type that council workers, the electricity board, construction workers, etc use.

I am a hobbyist but I use one as my usual coats don't like being scuffed by bricks or having oily roofing bitumen rubbed all over them and end up being less waterproof.
 
Welcome, Jamzflood.

Installation work is rewarding and certainly interesting as other member installers will tell you, But first and foremost it can be a very dangerous occupation, So my advice would be prepare your working area correctly, Take your time dont rush, And Always Always use the right PPE equipment and follow HSE requirements for working at heights, DO NOT ,cut :-Nooo corners.
Appart from that i wish you the best of look in your new career :)
 
The 2218 course/NVQ2 covers HSE requirements.
 
I was not saying it wasnt satelliteman, doing a course and following the requirements is a different kettle of fish, I was merely pointing out the dangers of not following procedures, like a few young men i came across in the past 25 yrs who have also done the course: But did not stop them falling through a conservatory from the roof. e.t.c, Because they thought they were jack the lad
I am merely offering some advice from the field and not the classroom.

I am sure he will know all about the course.

I thought it was some advise he was asking for:confused :

Most of the time it's just common sense :)
 
Thanks for the advice. I dont tend to cut corners apart from cleaning the house ;)

The first lesson was great. Looking at diagrams of sattelites and fitting them together, including some theory about frequencys and signals.

All in all a good lesson and im sure more practical to come :)

I might actually keep a log some how on the forum of each week I go.

Glad you enjoyed it - and some sort of report/log certainly would be a useful exercise, so go with it!


BTW, I take it it was Satellite Dishes you were playing with, not actual Satellites?
 
Sorry i get Satelites and Aerials mixed up :P
We were fixeing aerials together, sattelite dishes next week :P
 
I think that when you get to the stage where you are playing with actual satellites we would be VERY interested :) Until that time however just make sure to always always stay save and not fall off the roof!
