I have had my iPod mini 4gb (with EU Volume Limit imposed?) now for a few months. Up until about a week ago I was listening at about 80% volume (80% being an estimate by my eyes of the on-screen bar).

A few days ago I found I had to listen on 100% because 80% seemed a bit quieter than usual.

Today on 100% it just doesn't SEEM quite as loud as yesterday

Am I losing my hearing slowly but surely?

Apart from this, everything seems ok.. today at college I had no problems hearing anyone and normal speech between other people doesn't seem any quieter.

Is this just an early indication of problems? Should I stop using my iPod?

Wasn't sure if this was the right place to post.. but anyway, all info appreciated. Thanx

My only other theory is that about a week ago I read about the volume limit on iPods within the EU, and that maybe my brain is being auto-suggested by this and is making me think it's quieter.

Loud sounds (music played through earphones) can certainly damage your hearing over quite a short period of time. See this BBC report:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4162028.stm

and heed this warning:

"The first warning sign that volumes might be too high is a ringing or buzzing noise in the ears"

If you are at all worried go to the docs and get your hearing checked

Things to consider - get the docotor to check your hearing - it may be wax or something....

Your iPod maybe faulty - borrow a friends iPod and try that (make sure you find out about the wax first) :-doh!

Try another set of ear phones...

If you want to boost your volume try here... Mac only but there's a link to PC software... now this application can damage your hearing.

On my new Sony Walkman, volume levels go from 1 - 9. Strangely, if purchased in France, the levels are set to 1 - 6.

Why just France? Are they peculiarly more sensitive aurally, or are the EU restrictions on sound levels more severe there?

The "EU" laws on a volume limit for portable audio devices are compulsory only in france. - however Apple (and a few other companies) went one step further and banged the volume restriction on ALL EU iPods. Which wasn't a bad decision really... It saves peoples hearing and is probably cheaper...

It's because France has some laws and things which are better than ours :D
