Programmes were terminated at midnight. Although reports say one of the low power relays carried on for a bit as it was fed from a different source :-rofl2

Recently on most nights I can receive 1188kHz Nemzetiségi Adások from Hungary, sometimes it's the clearest station on the dial.

Two transmitters listed in Hungary 300 and 100 kilowatts. To be on the air from 7 am to 7 pm. And as well as Hungarian, they have slots with other languages such as Romanian, Ukranian, Polish and Slovenian. So the antennas could be directional towards Europe. It is indeed a massively strong signal this time of year in the evenings in Ireland.

Hungary has another even more powerful transmitter on 540 kHz, which is also very strong.

Thanks, that'll be why when I tried a few KiwiSDRs none were receiving 1188kHz. Haven't listened to much MW in recent years as UK stations are unlistenable in the car at night here - I was shocked at just how clear 1188kHz was in comparison. I'd found it by mistake when checking if Greatest Hits on 1170kHz had closed.

540KHz coming in loud and clear in the car (Kossuth Rádió). :)

Transmitter Solt is the most powerful medium wave transmitter in the world.

TalkSport are the next network to start reducing their AM transmitter sites. They have asked Ofcom for permission to turn off 4 smaller sites immediately with a further 13 going "as the sites become unviable" The 17 sites currently affected by the proposals are:

a) closing four transmitter sites immediately: Dumfries (Dumfries & Galloway), Kingston upon Hull (East Riding of Yorkshire), Fern Borrow (Bournemouth) and Greenside Scalp (Tayside). TalkSPORT identified these four transmitter sites as areas that may already be unviable.

b) closing the remaining thirteen sites gradually: Fareham (Hampshire), Stockton (Durham/North Yorkshire), Lydd (Kent), Southwick/Brighton (West Sussex), Dartford Tunnel (Kent), Clipston (Nottinghamshire), Duxhurst (Surrey), Wallasey (Cheshire), Lisnagarvey (County Antrim, Northern Ireland), Boston (Suffolk), Wrekenton (Newcastle), Postwick (Norfolk), Rusthall (Tunbridge Wells).

And this is why the networks are closing the AM services.

Para 4.7 from the Ofcom report

talkSPORT notes that, further to the proposal made in 2019, there has been a continued decline in analogue listening at a rate faster than it had predicted and the listening at the sites talkSPORT wants to close, based on RAJAR data, is no longer at appreciable levels due to the evolution of audience behaviour. Their analysis of Q3 2022 RAJAR data confirms the ongoing long-term decline in AM listening and that sites identified as closure priorities remain so as a result of the latest data. Based on current projections, talkSPORT asserts that its AM network may be completely unviable by early 2026

Whist DAB gives Talkradio an edge in the home, there will be a loss of many listeners in cars, the ones that are not within the RAJAR figures.

1548 MW :confused-lol:-ohcrap
Damned!!! losing 1548 is a blow!! It was so nice to have them at night while driving all over south France!
They should keep at least ONE frequency for news, another for music (that s 1548) for people driving in & around the EU!
We lost France Inter LW ,and really miss it....
so,the UK 's following France's (bad) example.

If you would like to pay the electricity bill for keeping 1548 on air just so you can listen to it when driving round France then Im sure some arrangement could be err..... arranged :D Listenership in MW is now so low its just not worth keeping them on air.

Oh and the 1548 antenna array needs some severe maintenance - its been on a backup antenna for years since it was struck by lightning which did damage to parts of the main array. Want to pay for the repairs to that too?
