1458 kHz Manchester (which I think was Fortune 1458?) is to be axed at the end of April.

Its currently one of the few remaining Gold radio services.

1458 in Machester seems to have had a complicated history. Starting off with BBC R Manchester it was then removed from the BBC & handed over to ILR

All R4 MW transmitters had the programming removed & moved over to retune loops from mid morning onwards. Carlisle & Plymouth seems to have been the last two to be done.

The Bangra station would have been Lyca Radio in London. Its still going - the Asian stations seem reluctant to shut their MW transmiters down.

Saw this old doc about the closure of AM Radio Luxembourg in 1992.. they announced that they would now broadcast in digital stereo from the Astra satellite. Was it actually digital then?

well,Radio Luxemburg continued on long waves(234)...in French, until last year. Just a kind of boring "talk radio"-with-ads.
Continues on FM ,it s a very old station,it started round 1930. For grumpy old (French)men!:D:D
Known as "RTL" nowadays.

Edit! it s even older ,Wiki says
"En 1925, François et Marcel créent l'Association Radio Luxembourg et commencent à diffuser de la musique. Les programmes s'étoffent au fil des mois et sont présentés à la fois en luxembourgeois, français, allemand et anglais. En 1927, la radio associative diffuse deux à trois heures de programmes par semaine.
A multilingual precursor of a united Europe!!

The German version of RTL continues,I guess,on FM in the German Sprachraum for its Liebhabern!https:// www.rtlradio.de/

nah, too late. ADR launched in 1995, this was 1992

Does seem odd it being referred to as "digital"! The only reference I can see to it on satellite in 1992 is as a good old analogue stereo pair on Astra 1A transponder 13 7.38+7.56 -

Code:
13 TV RTL4 NL du 11.391 H PAL 6.50 M y/n
                                                  7.02 M + 7.20 M
13 R RTL Intern'l L - " 7.38+7.56 S
13 R RTL 4 Radio NL du " 7.74+7.92 S

Radio Luxembourg was piggybacked on the Astra RTL channel after programme closedown, it might be the crossover from one transponder to another at the uplink station was in digital format.

RTL Radio (Germany) was on DSR (16 channels, uncompressed, 48ks/s, 16 bit) on DFS Kopernikus 1 and TV Sat 2 from 1992 to Jan 1999 when DSR transmissions ended. As far as I know, DSR was never on Astra.

Correct, never broadcast from Astra 19E, but the content could have been digital from the studio to the uplink station.
Perhaps somebody from the commercial side of things (at the time) can provide the answer.

yes, could be digital at some earlier stage of the journey, a bit like how fibre to the cabinet is sold as fibre

The Radio 4 Medium Wave transmitters appear to have been all switched off sometime before noon on 30 April. 756 kHz BBC Radio Cumbria, and 1449 kHz BBC Asian Network from Peterborough area now have those frequencies to themselves in England.

It would be interesting to retune a modern vehicle radio in this area to find these stations.
