It is indeed sad to learn of the passing of the reveered and well-lauded members of the public elite.

But to be very honest, there are a whole range of people who are "nearer" than Carrie or George, and whom I have a much closer relationship with.

For example, I spend an hour or more a day participating in the club that is satellites.co.uk.
There are people here I do concern myself about a lot more than I probably should:
  • I concern myself about member_A's various challenges, both ailments and experiments with SDR.
  • I wonder at the achievements of member_B with dishes all sizes and shapes (and welding efforts!).
  • I rejoice in the building-intricacies of member_C making his own m*f*n polar mount from scratch. (!)
  • I speculate on what is the experience of member_D on his multiple 1.8m dishes on the adapted polar mount.
  • I am amazed at the reception of fringe stuff on a dish supported by a car-tire and some rope.
  • I marvel at the efforts of member_F to compile reception maps that aid hundreds, if not thousands.
  • I take comfort in the likes accosted to my (hopeless) postings in the music list.
  • I applaud and fully support the bold new member who ask the question "I know nothing, what should I do?"
  • I fully approve of the many others who points dishes at the sky, and wonder "what the heck?"
...and so forth - I could go on for a long time.

But most of all, I care about the range of people offering advice and (most importantly) their time to guide others. Well done you!

In short, I spend a lot more time on satellites.co.uk than I ever spend on Carrie, George, Liz, Richard and Francis, or any other of the icons who passed away over Christmas. They were undoubtably great, but there are other as relevant (or more) to me people out there.

So before everything gets a bit too gloomy - let me just point out that there are a lot of things to get excited about right now, even if people are dropping like flies around the world!

I apologise if I offend anyone here, but I do place more reverence in the esteemed members of satellites.co.uk than I do in the stars of the silver screen.
