Well done ARM...

Starting from a turkey shed here in Cambridge, ARM Holdings, who began with the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Chip) first used in the Acorn Archimedes computer back in the '80s, have now signed a deal with MIcrosoft to use their chip design in the new Windows software.

You don't have to look far to find ARM-based chip cores in the stuff you have in your house - everything from smartphones, satellite receivers and mundane domestic goods like washing machines.

I think my old Compaq iPaq PDA has an Intel StrongARM CPU, aside from the reference to the Armstrong name (part of my family history), the thought that the same basic hardware once powered the Acorn computers I used at school when growing up, it's pretty amazing that they're still going, even if powering things like phones and PDAs rather than computer systems (though I'm sure I have seen some ARM based laptops before!!)... :)
 
Are any of the original Acorn people still involved? Nice to see a UK company doing well.
 
AFAIK, none of the major players are presently involved in ARM Holdings, bur it's such a sprawling global company, who knows?

Of the co-founders Chris Curry and Hermann Hauser, Curry was one of the team that developed the RISC project associated with ARM, but both moved on to other companies.

Amusing fact - Roger Wilson, one of the original Acorn team and who developed the video architecture and codecs for Acorn machines, appeared as a pub landlady calling time in the 2009 BBC drama 'Micro Men' about the rivalry between Chris Curry and Clive Sinclair.

(S)he had changed gender by then, now called Sophie Wilson.
