Hi,

Could somebody help me understand the migration from Astra2D to the Astra1N. To be honest I'm kind of confused as it seems to good to be real!

Some people mention that the signal is stronger and they can receive BBC, ITV channels with dish sizes as big as 1m in some areas of Madrid! where before they needed a 1.8M dish!

If this is true, will it last long? Is the Astra1N here to stay?

Thanks

It is true, but may not last for long.

1N is actually destined for 19.2E, but went temporarily to 28E as 2D was failing faster than anticipated.

Despite much speculation, it simply is not possible to predict what will happen when the new permanent replacement birds are launched and operating at 28E.

Take what you can get, but don't splash cash just now.

Thanks for the reply, I thought it was too good to be true!

Is there a date for the satellite replacement?

Starts the end of this year (2F), with 2E joining the fleet next year & the final bird 2G in early 2014

1N is an interim fix and wasnt designed for 28E. Its beams are shaped for use at 19E, so its no surprise that some areas are doing better from 1N than previously from 2D.

I think all of the above is good and accurate - I would add however that if considering using 1n for the next 12 months (or whatever time we get with it!) use the smallest and cheapest dish you can get away with rather than the otherway around as we really dont know what we will need when 2e finally starts transmitting the UK freeview and sky services. My logic for this is if you spend a lot and later find the dish is then not big enough you will have wasted a lot of money - and also if you buy the most expensive dish you may find it was not needed - and so again you will have wasted loads of dosh! If you are wanting to and able to take advantage of the 1n signal now good luck to you but be prepared for possibly expensive changes later next year. For those of us who already have systems up and running the decisions are a bit easier - we simply wait to see if it will still work once 1n moves!!!!

Eh? SES cant change the beam shaping once a bird is on orbit. The beam patterns may change a bit depending on the orientation of the satellite in its new home but that would only affect distant viewers at the edge of the coverage.

We can say with certainty though that Israel still wont get what is currently the "UK" beam at 28E - the easterly drop off is too steep.
