Astra 1N is about to start travelling to her new home at 19.2E after temporarily serving the UK for a few years at 28.2E.

It's going to be interesting to see if and how the spot beam will be used and how well the PE1 and PE2 beams reach the edges of Europe and beyond.

I have experienced the sharp drop off of signals on the eastern edge of PE1 in Finland where a 1.8m just outside the reported footprint got nothing. I really hope I won't be cut off again by PE1 at 19.2E as currently a small 80cm dish in Helsinki can pick up the entire range of Astra 1 transponders.

She'll be emptied this Tuesday night/Wednesday morning so it seems, so her move could start around Thursday?

SES centre of box data for 1N ends on Wednesday afternoon so it looks likely to me.

Can't see what other use it would have as it is a fairly wide "spot". Let's not forget the 1KR Polish spot too... potential for frequency reuse at last?

So what is 1N replacing at 19.2? Is another bird coming out of service there?

Originally 2C was due to come back to 28.2E but not sure if it will now, or go somewhere else? It's getting old too though so needs replacing eventually.

Attached was one of my original theories for Astra 1N taken from another thread somewhere. Of course there is also a chance that the 1N spot will not be used at 19.2E, rather like the 1KR spot isn't in use any more...

I read somewhere that the Polish TVP package probably will cease its transmission on Astra 1 by the end of this year. The Hotbird is the Polish hotspot. So no need for the Polish spot. The Spanish package is not FTA so no need for a Spanish spot either.

As far as I know the Polish 1KR spot beam isn't in use right now. The Polish channels are coming in full strength here.

I think it will change as it was more focused on the UK when it was at 28.2E. I think/hope the beams will be shifted eastwards and probably south to include the Canary Islands.

But if not Poland maybe it'll be used at some other position on the eastern side of Europe at some point. The point of these spots are not for restricting content but for more efficient use of the limit spectrum by reusing frequencies on the opposite sides of Europe.

I'm not suggesting it'll happen next month, but that the option is there for future expansion.

True! With Astra 5B launching soon for Eastern Europe and Poland leaving 19.2E plans will probably have changed somewhat since the original Astra 1K plans in the 90s.
